Nearly everyone in Germany knows the brightly coloured, smiling AIDA cruise liners and its no wonder. In terms of passengers and turnover, AIDA cruises are number one when it comes to Germanys choice in the seaside holiday market.
AIDA sails to destinations right across the world including the Mediterranean, Canary Islands, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Central America, the Caribbean and Dubai. On board and playing a key role, is Metrologics OptimusRW mobile computer. Despite the idyllic locations, the weather can often have other ideas and rough seas are of course part of life on a ship, and therefore all equipment on board needs to be accordingly robust.
OptimusRW with its IP65 rating and reinforced form factor provides the durability needed in an application taking place in storage areas or machine rooms where oily hands or rough weather can easily lead to a unit being dropped. Each of the four AIDA Club cruise liners is equipped with fi ve or six devices and the new AIDAbela, which will be launched in 2008, will have six OptimusRW on board. These WiFi enabled devices are currently being used to download data through standard batch operation. However, AIDA Cruises is testing WLAN operations at present under the appropriately named Cast off programme .
