Metrologic Instruments, Inc. recently announced that following a successful pilot, it will supply Tesco Stores Ltd. the United Kingdom's largest retail organisation, with up to 3500 units of the StratosH bi-optic, high-throughput, in-counter scanner/scale solution during its current fiscal year, through February 2006.

Metrologic and its integrator partner, Herbert Retail, suppliers of the weigh scale load cell, have currently delivered and installed 1,600 units at Tesco's stores under the previously announced pilot. The StratosH bi-optic scanning/scale solution, with its 360 scanning capability, puts the scanning hardware directly in front of the operator during checkout operations. This allows the operator to simply pass the product across the scanner in one smooth movement from one hand to another for faster throughput at the checkout station. Through bi-optic scanning Tesco is able to leverage the productivity benefits of its new "Simpler Checkout" and produce a more effective and efficient "Scan and Pack" operation.

Neil Finch, IT project leader for Tesco, stated, "The pilot showed that the large scale integration of Stratos within the "Simpler Checkout" environment can deliver the productivity benefits for Tesco that the system was designed to produce."

Mark Ryan, director EMEA sales for Metrologic, said, "Metrologic is delighted that the pilot demonstrated the unique selling points of the Stratos series and more importantly produced the key business benefits that Tesco expected. We look forward with our partner, Herbert Retail, to continue to deliver a scanner/scale solution which provides performance with low total cost of ownership - a key driver in today's competitive retail landscape."
