Paxar to unveil new generation RFID garment tags at RS2004

Paxar UK (Paxar), part of the 250,000 customer-strong Paxar Corporation, the worlds leading manufacturer of apparel labelling and identification products, announces that it will be exhibiting at this years Retail Solutions Exhibition 2004. As well as providing visitors with an insight into its innovative suite of technology products, there will be a specific demonstration of its new breed Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) micro chip tags, for item level garment tagging, using the Marks & Spencer application.

The Monarch 9855 printerThe Marks & Spencer application is currently being tested in the largest garment-specific trial ever. The trial is in its second phase, and being tested at six of Marks & Spencers London stores specifically on its mens suits. The tags developed for the garment trial are contained within throwaway paper labels called Intelligent Labels.

This is the first time ever RFID technology has been used on individual garments for purposes of supply chain efficiency and in-store availability. RFID is being used within Marks and Spencers supply chain as the next generation of barcode. With the ability to read product details on the RFID tags at different points in the supply chain, the information can be used to ensure that the right goods are delivered to the right store at the right time.

Through Paxars strong business relationships with chip and antenna manufacturers, the Company has been able to develop an antenna that ensures that when the finished tag is finally constructed it is tuned to the correct reader frequency. In instances where this hasnt been done, the antenna runs the high risk of detuning as a result of lamination, which accordingly reduces the read-range performance of the finished label.
