As the most important games of the season begin,  the Swedish national biathlon team sharpened its preparations with the use of high performing ultra-rugged computers. According to the sponsorship agreement, the Swedish national biathlon team will use Handheld's Algiz XRW ultra-rugged notebook for timing and other services to the athletes. Handheld Group is a global manufacturer of rugged mobile computers and smartphones.

The sponsorship deal between the Swedish national biathlon team and rugged computer maker Handheld comprises that the Swedish national biathlon team — its biathletes, coaches and managers — will use Handheld's Algiz XRW in the field for a variety of tasks, including timing, during practice and competitions. Biathlon is a winter sport that combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting, sometimes carried out in temperatures nearing –20°C (–4°F).

The rugged Algiz XRW notebook can withstand shocks, rain and snow as well as extreme temperatures and is ideal for use in the field. It combines unprecedented performance in the field with a slim, lightweight and compact design and ultra-rugged toughness. The "XRW" stands for "eXtreme Road Warrior".

"Our biathletes and coaching staff operate in the toughest of environments," said Ingemar Arwidson, General Secretary of the Swedish Biathlon Federation. "To best serve our athletes with accurate information, we needed to find a technology solution that could stand up to the variety of weather conditions and the rough handling they encounter during training and competition."

"Enhances training and in-competition coaching"

"Our obvious choice is the Algiz XRW. Handheld's functional and rugged computers work nicely in all weather conditions and have screens that are fully visible even in direct sunlight. Rugged computers enhance training and in-competition coaching and will definitely give us a competitive edge going into the most important part of the last few seasons," concludes Arwidson.

The Algiz XRW ultra rugged notebook has a full keyboard and a 10.1-inch touchscreen with screen visibility even in direct sunlight. The notebook carries an overall IP65 rating against sand, dust and water and meets stringent MIL-STD-810G military standards for withstanding humidity, vibration, drops and extreme temperatures. The compact, slim Algiz XRW weighs in at only 1.6 kg. It has integrated GPS functionality and multiple connectivity options such as high powered 3G and Wi-Fi keep the user connected, everywhere and always.

The Algiz XRW rugged notebook comes with a fast and powerful 1.6 GHz Dual Core Intel Atom processor. It includes a 128 GB solid state disk and 4 GB of DDR3 RAM and runs Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate.

"Biathlon is one of the toughest sports in the world," says Jerker Hellström, CEO, Handheld Group. "You need strength, endurance and precision to succeed — the same attributes that our mobile computers have. This is a very fitting cooperation. The national Swedish biathlon team and its coaching staff will be fine representatives for everything that Handheld stands for: quality, strength, and attention to detail."

Handheld's line-up of rugged PDAs, smartphones and mobile computers is specifically developed for field workers in industries such as geomatics, logistics, forestry, public transportation, utilities, construction, maintenance, mining, military and security.
