A whole new approach to network storage could change day-to-day business life for creative SMEs.

Belfast-based IT company Rockstar Data has launched its Rockstar Server, which has been developed to match the performance of top-end products more than twice the price. Aimed at the creative industries, it tackles ongoing IT problems hampering businesses' productivity and efficiency, by combining speed of access, with storage reliability and simplicity of use.

With the cloud increasingly becoming the storage medium of choice for SMEs, Rockstar is warning that it presents a risk to file security, as exact data location and reliability of the server is it stored upon are unknown.

Hans Enoksen, CEO and founder of Rockstar, said: "The shift to the cloud is a popular choice for small and medium-sized businesses looking for a storage solution that doesn't carry a high-end price tag.  It's fine to use the cloud, but the safe option is to use it in combination with physical storage and the Rockstar Server offers the quality blue chip companies expect, but is within budget reach."

The server also offers:

  • Up to 64 TB storage in a single unit, requiring no extra parts or costs, with 512 TB additional capacity available, to allow for business growth

  • Speeds of up to 1,500MB/s on 1 and/or 10GbE Ethernet – 50 pet cent faster than Fibre Channel

  • Use on the move – with iPad and iPhone apps for business, allowing automatic and wireless back-up to the server

  • Fully compatible with Mac OSX, Windows and Linux

  • True plug-and-play connectivity for easy installation

  • No client licences

With collaborative working also a core requirement for creative studios, files need to be easily movable and version control kept intact. Since Apple withdrew the Xserve, the only option for studios working with massive media files has been to invest in complicated, high-end and high-cost solutions. Rockstar data overcomes those problems and will fit simply and seamlessly into existing Apple studios.

Mr Enoksen added: "This server keep studios happy because they can keep creating, but it also offers businesses audit trail security and an assurance they are following the rules.

"We believe we're creating a storage revolution for the creative industry. And that's because Rockstar offers best-in-class hardware and seamless, super high-speed networking, to give assurance of quality, speed of access and guarantee of back-up in a crisis. Like top-end products, it is made from the best ingredients, but because we have the benefit of smaller overheads, we can make this quality a reality for SMEs."

Rockstar is aimed at SMEs, namely creative and design agencies, photographers, production and post-production companies, publishers and studios. The products are available through selected Apple re-sellers.

The server costs £15-20,000, depending on specification. For more information, visit www.rockstar-data.com
