List prices in Europe's top three economies of second-generation Linear Tape Open drives (LTO2) were down 33% in March compared to the same month a year ago according to figures published by Context.
Context"s PriceWatch research, tracking list, street and distributor pricing of storage products in ten European countries, revealed that the average list price of an LTO2 drive in the UK, France and Germany in March 2004 was Euro 5,023. By March 2005 this had dropped to Euro 3,389. Germany and the UK both saw year-on year price drops of 33%, with prices in France down by 32%.
The price erosion has been hastened by the introduction earlier this year by the major vendors of the third-generation technology (LTO3), which has established itself at the price point occupied previously by LTO2.
