Kyman: The Brand-New Palm Terminal from Datalogic

The Kyman is the first key-based palm terminal in the mobile@work family, Datalogic's line of products for industrial environments. It is a light-weight hand-held terminal with advanced data processing and communication features to read both linear and 2D codes, and transfer data in real-time in mobile applications. Fast two-way communications enable work instructions and information updates to be exchanged quickly, speeding up processes and increasing productivity.

Based on the same PC-like architecture of the Viper, the pistol grip terminal also in the mobile@work family, the Kyman fully supports the RadioReady concept for wireless communication, so that the most diffused WLAN PC-cards can be used. Consequently, communication is extremely flexible, compliant with all emerging technologies and different vendors. Datalogic supplies RF WLAN technology, compliant with Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11b standard by Cisco Systems.

Communication management to the legacy system takes advantage of a new DL-TCL software, that includes terminal emulation connectivity for OS/400, Unix, Microsoft Windows platforms, and the most used ERPs, such as SAP R/3. The DL-TCL, Datalogic Terminal Emulation Client, is a powerful Datalogic proprietary software tool that has been created to easily address any common application running terminal emulation. It has been specifically developed for Datalogic wireless DOS portable terminals, both Formula and mobile@work product families, and will be embedded free-of-charge.

This tough terminal has ruggedised housing to withstand multiple 1.5 m drops on concrete and is environmentally sealed against severe weather conditions, including dust and rain (IP54). It has rechargeable, high-autonomy Li-ION or long-lasting NiMH batteries with the hot-swapping feature, an innovative characteristic of the mobile@work product family, to substitute the battery without loosing data or the RF session.

All components of the user interface have been designed to make the Kyman easy to use, beginning with the high-contrast back-lit LCD display (160 x 240 pixels), keyboard controlled contrast for visualising any operation in all ambient light conditions, and a 42-key alphanumeric keypad.

The versatile Kyman palm terminal provides high productivity and comfort in demanding mobile environments, and is particularly suitable for warehousing, shop-floor and transportation applications, such as real-time receiving, tracking, storage, picking and shipping.
