There are many threats that websites face but potentially the most dangerous and common is the
threat that hackers pose. The goals of hackers are simple and they are to steal intellectual property,
steal confidential information, read data and files, deliver a virus or malware, and even for the sake
of bragging about their conquest after the fact. It’s obvious why companies would want to prevent
this from happening, but the question is how to do it?

If you want to beef up the protection and security for your website, here are five ways you can go
about it.

Install Security Plugins and SSL

One of the most basic steps in protecting your website from hackers is to install security plugins and
SSL (secure sockets layer). For those who don't consider themselves a techie, an SSL just means that
you have a secure connection to the internet that is encrypted. Of note, security plugins will need to
be updated, and failure to do so puts at risk the security of the site.

Always Use Strong Passwords

Password protection is a powerful tool, but it's only as good as the passwords you use. You don't
want to use simple ones that would be easy to hack; instead, it needs to be comprised of random
numbers, symbols and letters (upper and lower case). There are even password generating tools
that will provide you with options you can use. As an added layer of protection, these passwords
should also be changed regularly - again, making things hard for hackers.

Always Back Up

It has been said time and time again and it can't be stressed enough. It is essential that you back up
your data on your website regularly. This can save you from a lot of stress and headaches if
something were to happen. Just think about what you would do if all your data were lost.

Use Dedicated Security Software

Nowadays there are plenty of options available in terms of website security software, from the bare
minimum protection to much more advanced offerings. You want to be sure you have these in place
at all times, as the software will constantly offer updates as new threats are identified.

Get a Website Maintenance Package

For many companies, the thought of having to take all these steps and keep up with the efforts
regularly is just too much. In that case, it makes sense to hire a company that offers a website
maintenance package to keep your business website up to date. They will have the tools and
knowledge needed to keep the site secure, and they can identify if any threats or hacks do occur.

One Step Won’t Be Enough

The final tip to keep in mind is that you don’t want to stop at just one step or one protective
measure. It’s best to take a layered approach, using all the tools available. This will provide more
wide-reaching protection.

Just because you’ve been lucky so far and your website hasn’t been hacked, it doesn’t mean it will
stay that way. The fact is that hackers are always out there lurking and trying to get into your site.
Taking protective measures is necessary.
