DevOps experts will be the most in-demand developers in 2021 as remote working continues to drive demand, according to the latest global developer report* by CodinGame.

The developer recruitment platform interviewed more than 15,000 developers and tech recruiters around the world to compile its 4th annual developer report, and asked recruiters which tech position they would find hardest to fill this year.

Ranked third in 2019, DevOps profiles leap-frogged Back-End and Full-Stack developers in 2020 to become the most highly sought-after tech job.

And 43% of tech recruiters surveyed admitted they will struggle to find qualified DevOps for their tech teams this year, with continued high demand across many business sectors.

The switch to remote working in 2020 saw a sudden rise in demand for DevOps experts to help businesses migrate their operations to the cloud during the pandemic and manage cloud infrastructures.

The survey also revealed that for the third year running, Javascript is the most requested programming language by tech recruiters. While, six-out-of-ten (60%) recruiters say demand is high for developers with knowledge of Javascript, Java and Python.

More than half the developers polled by CodinGame said they knew how to code in these three programming languages.

As for other languages, just under half (45%) of those developers interviewed said they could code in C, but only 15% of recruiters said they needed developers with knowledge of the general-purpose programming language.

According to the annual survey, React, Node.js, and .NETCore are currently the most popular frameworks amongst developers.

React is the most sought-after framework, with 59% of recruiters interested in developers who know the open-source Javascript library.

Aude Barral, co-founder of developer recruitment platform CodinGame, comments: “With businesses having to adapt to the new normal by moving their operations to the cloud, the demand for DevOps went through the roof last year.

“Recruiters don’t see that demand tailing off in 2021, as workforces continue to work remotely despite vaccination programmes being ramped up. And a growing number of businesses have confirmed they will adopt remote working or offer flexible working to their staff post-pandemic.”
