Robert Gordon University (RGU) is developing Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to enable people to live healthier lives, manage chronic conditions and live independently at home for longer and will showcase the latest research at DataFest18 Fringe in Inverness.
The 'FIT for Healthy Living' workshop, taking place on March 20, will feature health innovation projects applying Future Intelligent Technologies (FIT), with projects including the 'FIT Home' and FIT medical devices which offer convenient ways to help manage healthy living.
Professor Susan Craw from RGU will deliver a workshop, in partnership with Albyn Housing and Carbon Dynamic, on the FIT Home project which involves homes being developed with smart home sensors that monitor activity and collect data, helping to predict and prevent falls.
The FIT home enables residents to live independently and offers improved quality of life, especially for those with complex health and care needs. It could potentially transform the way health and social care is delivered.
There will also be a workshop with RGU's Professor Nirmalie Wiratunga and Dr Stewart Massie which will look at self-management technologies for low back pain (LBP) and diabetes.
Prof Wiratunga will present how smart devices are being used for the self-management of LBP in the selfBACK, a H2020 research project funded by EU; whilst Dr Massie looks at the use of recommender systems and how these can be influenced by previous observations and user behaviours inferred from smart devices.
Professor Craw commented: "At RGU we are looking at many ways the introduction of Future Intelligent Technologies can help you to live independently and to manage illnesses and chronic conditions. FIT enables you to take control of your own health and wellness.
"Our workshops as part of DataFest18 Fringe are designed to attract both technology and health professionals but will also be of interest to anyone interested in artificial intelligence and new technologies related to smart devices and smart homes."
DataFest18 Fringe, FIT for Healthy Living, will take place at HIE's digital demonstration centre #hellodigital within An Lochran, 10 Inverness Campus, on March 20, 0930-1630.
