Power management company Eaton has launched a user-friendly monitoring system for emergency lighting, which aims to eradicate the cost and time pressures associated with manual maintenance checks in commercial buildings.

"Eaton have long standing expertise in emergency lighting monitoring systems, with three existing products on the market," said John Robb, Marketing Director at Eaton. "With the launch of CGLine+, we have combined the best capabilities of these products in one highly-configurable solution, which will meet the needs of a broad range of building managers, helping them to meet their legal obligations, uphold the safety of occupants and protect business continuity."

Each CGLine+ controller supports the monitoring of up to 800 luminaires. Internet connectivity allows the interconnection of controllers to allow advanced monitoring and automatic testing of up to 25,000 luminaires from a single control point. Open system interfacing to building management systems is also supported.

The system ensures that faults are detected and logged in real time so that steps can be taken to keep them in safe working order. As a result, emergency lighting can be relied upon to support safe evacuation from a building in the event of a fire alert or other emergency.

Users can view the system either through a simple web-based interface (HMI) that is ideal for smaller buildings, or via the more advanced CGVision software that is available to larger sites. Individual building plans can be uploaded to the system to create a graphical representation of luminaire locations, which enables fast pinpointing of problems that require remedial maintenance. Additionally, the Auto-ID function assigns a unique ID to each luminaire, negating the need for manual addressing of luminaires and therefore cutting down installation and commissioning time.

Testing of luminaires takes place automatically at a time convenient to the end user. All tests and alerts are auto-populated into a fully backed-up digital logbook, and optional PC package, that securely stores system configurations and event data. The system also allows for real-time email alerts to be issued as events occur, keeping the user informed and helping to maintain the records required for compliance purposes.

The CGLine+ system is designed to support Eaton's full range of market-leading emergency luminaires as part of a comprehensive installation. However, integration with selected third-party luminaires is also possible in some circumstances.

John Robb continues: "This system is not only quick and easy to install but simple to operate too, which takes away the stress, cost and workforce allocation issues associated with conducting manual maintenance checks on a regular basis. What you are left with is complete peace of mind that a reliable programme of testing is taking place and any potential faults will be identified, alerted to the most relevant person and logged. The result is that you are complying with your legal responsibilities with regard to the building and protecting the people and other assets within it, as well as minimising interruptions to business operations."
