Toshiba Electronics Europe, Storage Products Division has announced its next generation of enterprise-class HDDs. The AL13SE series will deliver 900GB of capacity in a high-speed drive, ideal for business-critical data. The 2.5-inch (6.4cm) small form factor HDDs with a 10,500RPM spindle speed and 6GB/s SAS interface, allows critical data to be accessed whenever necessary. The new SlimFITT models of the AL13SE series (AL13SEL) offer the same drive in a 3.5-inch mounting frame, ideal for system architectures accustomed to holding traditionally large form factor enterprise devices.

The HDD is the first Toshiba HDD to utilise Dual-Stage Head Positioning Actuator technology. This increases track density by 21 per cent and contributes to a 44 per cent increase in areal density compared to the previous generation, whilst still adhering to the industry standard 512 byte sector length, assuring compatibility with other applications.  Toshiba has persistently increased areal density since it pioneered Perpendicular Magnetic Recording (PMR) in 2006.

Enterprises are facing a data deluge and global annual data consumption is now estimated at 9.75 zettabytes. Quick access speeds and reliability are essential in demanding enterprise environments where high-priority data needs to be accessible 24/7. With an improved head-disk interface proximity sensor, the AL13SE series boasts a 25 per cent increase in operating reliability, giving the family of drives an operating reliability rating of two million power-on hours. The series also features a 32 per cent increase in internal transfer rate compared to the previous generation, as well as significant improvements in the read/write seek performances.

Through on-going commitment to social and environmental responsibility Toshiba has implemented Supported Enhanced Power Condition State for significant savings in power consumption when the HDD is idle.

Martin Larsson, Vice President, Toshiba Electronics Europe, Storage Products Division, said: "Businesses face a challenge in managing huge amounts of data. The key is not just to increase storage capacity but balance performance and reliability as well. The AL13SE series will enable enterprises to create a solution for any storage application. This new storage solution doesn't compromise on performance for the sake of capacity, delivering both increased access speeds and operating reliability. "
