LXE, a division of EMS Technologies, has announced the Marathon field computer. The IP-65 rated, PC-based Marathon is a new form factor in mobile computing, developed with a larger screen size and greater computing power than a PDA, smaller size than a laptop, and multiple data capture and connectivity options. Taken together, the Marathon provides new levels of usability for field service, route accounting, direct store delivery, and retail storefront operations.

Ian Davies, Country Manager LXE UK, explained the market need filled by the Marathon. "Between PDAs and laptops, there is plenty of technology that offers mobility, but every current solution comes with sacrifice a lack of ruggedness, smaller screen size, or awkward ergonomics. The Marathon fills a void in the market for a fully rugged, PC-based experience with the right balance of screen size and ergonomics. An uncompromised technology experience for mobile workers equals an uncompromised service experience for their customers."

The Marathon Field Computer weighs 2.2 lb (0.99 kg), and is powered by a 1.6GHz Intel Atom processor that runs full Windows 7 or Windows XP operating systems. It combines multiple built-in data entry options, including a 7" outdoor-visible touchscreen, full QWERTY keypad, integrated fingerprint reader/mouse, and 2 megapixel camera. Additional bolt-on data capture accessories include a mag stripe reader and 2D imager, which attach securely to the unit while maintaining the overall IP 65 rating for protection against dust and water.

The Marathon Field Computer connects via Gobi WWAN radio. The Gobi technology means the Marathon can connect through either GSM or CDMA-based mobile carriers. The computer can also connect to a local area Wi-Fi network via 802.11 a/b/g/n. Bluetooth connectivity provides a user with the potential to connect various peripherals wirelessly. The Marathon Field Computer will begin Beta site deployments in September, with shipments to preorder customers scheduled for December. LXE plans to target customer-focused applications in field service, route accounting, and retail storefront in 2010, with additional markets rolling out in 2011 said Davies, "We are energised by the positive response that the Marathon has already received from our reseller partners and early adopter customers around the world. We look forward to serving their mobile workers - and changing the way they do business in the field."
