Wavetrend, a world leader in the deployment of active RFID solutions, has announced the release of their newest reader, the RX2100 'Psion Teklogix Workabout Pro End-Cap Reader', an expansion module compatible for use with the 2nd Generation Workabout Pro a rugged handheld computer from Psion Teklogix.

The new reader forms part of Wavetrend's forthcoming ActivMobility suite of Mobile Solutions for Active RFID Asset Management and provides the Workabout Pro handheld computer with the ability to detect and decode signals from Wavetrend's Activ and ActivDuo ranges of active RFID tags.

With mobility in mind, the design of the RX2100 End-Cap Reader allows multiple other expansion modules to be installed and used on the Workabout Pro -held computer simultaneous with the active RFID reader module. By allowing users to combine their choice of barcode scanners, imagers, wireless LAN & WAN adaptors, GPS positioning and GSM/GPRS/EDGE communication modules together with the active RFID reader, they can deploy powerful mobile RFID solutions across a wide array of asset management, location and tracking activities to suit their specific needs, with  information passing between the mobile reader and back end asset management system in real-time, as required.

Whether it is being used as a standalone mobile reader or as part of an enterprise asset management system that also employs a network of Wavetrend fixed readers, the RX2100 End-Cap Reader allows the user to quickly and easily search for and locate tagged assets using the Workabout Pro. Tagged asset information is displayed by a suitable application installed on the Workabout Pro enabling complete management of all tagged assets by users, even if they are out of range of a fixed reader network, and so allows the automation of business decisions about all tagged assets, based on accurate and near real-time knowledge of their location and condition. The RX2100 can also be used in conjunction with the Workabout Pro's barcode reader, allowing customers to scan and associate barcodes with active RFID tags for enhanced supply chain visibility.

Both Wavetrend and select Wavetrend Accredited Solution Partners offer users a choice of either out-the-box mobile reader solutions that will operate on the WORKABOUT PRO with the RX2100, or customised mobile applications created to suit specialist or specific user requirements.

The RX2100 can be supplied with the Wavetrend TagHound demonstration software (sold separately). TagHound allows the user to simply scan an area for tags, displaying the number of tags found and the detected tag ID numbers. The user can then select to find the location of an individual tag by following the 'tagometer' bar, which changes colour from red to green as the operator gets closer to the target tag.

"Wavetrend has provided mobile active RFID reader solutions to suit customer requirements since 2004," said Saleem Miyan, Wavetrend's Chief Executive Officer, adding, "The RX2100 End-Cap Reader and Workabout Pro device together provide a multi-functional, highly rugged mobile reader platform that extends the benefits of active RFID asset tagging beyond a fixed reader network". Miyan finished by saying, "We are extremely excited by the opportunities this mobile RFID reader offers to our customers, who can now locate, verify, or scan for tagged assets anywhere including the tough environments our tags can be used in, while interfacing with back-end systems to retrieve or update asset information, such as location, status, service records etc."

Wavetrend developed the RX2100 End-Cap Reader using the expansion module Hardware Development Kit provided by Psion Teklogix. The End-Cap Reader holds full CE and FCC certification and is available to order either from Wavetrend or Wavetrend's global network of Accredited Partners. The End-Cap Reader is available in two models, with the standard range model offering a typical tag read range of around 15m (45 feet) and the long range model offering a typical tag read range of around 45m (135 feet) through use of an external antenna (supplied with the reader).

The Workabout Pro offers users the choice of Microsoft CE 5.0 or Windows Mobile 6 operating systems. The Workabout Pro withstands 26 drops from five feet to polished concrete, shock and vibration consistent with mounting in a truck or a forklift. It includes an IP65 rating, protecting it against dust and water sprayed from all directions. Its full VGA colour display provides improved graphics capability, allowing field workers to see finer details in maps or schematics in most lighting conditions, including direct sunlight.
