Order includes infrastructure and terminal devices / Motorola presents current TETRA portfolio at Hanover Fair

Stuttgart Airport has awarded an order to Motorola to build a TETRA (TErrestrial Trunked RAdio) digital two-way radio system. The order includes the infrastructure and installation of a digital two-way radio network, and TETRA terminal devices for mobile voice and data communication. The new system will replace Stuttgart Airports existing analog Smartnet trunked two-way radio network, also from Motorola. The commissioning of the TETRA digital two-way radio system is scheduled for the fourth quarter.

The TETRA solution will be based on Motorolas Dimetra IP system. It gives Stuttgart Airport a scalable voice and data system, with a high degree of redundancy and protection against eavesdropping.

The planned four base stations permit up to 2,000 users to leverage the benefits of TETRA. In addition to the infrastructure, Motorola will supply its MTH850 handheld TETRA two-way radio terminals and MTM800e TETRA devices for in-vehicle use. The terminals are a particularly robust design and support a wide variety of future-proof communication functions, such as satellite-based GPS.

The TETRA system will be used as an independent communication platform in various areas of airport operations, including fleet management, freight and logistics. Due to its sophisticated transmission technology, the solution permits interference-free, clear voice calls in the presence of the loud background noise commonly encountered at airports.

Motorola won the contract against three competitors, as a result of its digital infrastructure and terminal devices. Our successful cooperation with Motorola in the past, as well as Motorolas comprehensive expertise with the provision of TETRA digital radio systems at other German airports, were decisive in our decision to place the order. Also, the economics of the offering was a perfect fit for our requirements, says Dirk Spengler, director information & communication, Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH. The TETRA digital two-way radio solution will bring benefits for our passengers and business partners.

Our TETRA solutions have already proven their value in numerous applications. Moreover, we can leverage many years of experience to provide optimum and personalized consulting services to our customers before, during and after the installation of a TETRA system, says Alexander Burghardt, MSSI vice president Central Europe, Eastern Europe & Russia, Motorola GmbH. As a result of security requirements, an increasing number of businesses from the private sector look for reliable and secure communication solutions. Using the TETRA digital radio network, Stuttgart Airport will be able to further reduce response times and increase the efficiency of workflows.

Motorola will present its latest portfolio of TETRA solutions for the industry, energy and transportation industries at Hanover Fair, 21-25 April 2008. On its booth K18 in Hall 6, the company will exhibit base stations, mobile and handheld radios as well as PDAs. In addition, visitors will be given the opportunity to experience TETRA applications for workforce management, condition monitoring, telemetry and teleservice.

About TETRA

TETRA is a generally accepted open digital two-way radio standard that was developed in the early 90s on behalf of the EU by the European Institute for Telecommunication and Standardization (ETSI). Motorola worked out this standard together with other telecommunication companies. The TETRA technology has since been deployed wherever the successful implementation of network and communication capacities for public organizations, government agencies and companies is of primary concern. Today, TETRA is used in more than 100 countries around the world. Motorola cooperates with industry partners on the continuous further development of the TETRA standard.
