Nearly everyone in Germany knows the brightly coloured, smiling AIDA cruise liners and its no wonder. In terms of passengers and turnover, AIDA cruises are number one when it comes to Germanys choice in the seaside holiday market.

AIDA sails to destinations right across the world including the Mediterranean, Canary Islands, North Sea, Baltic Sea, Central America, the Caribbean and Dubai. On board and playing a key role, is Metrologics OptimusRW mobile computer. Despite the idyllic locations, the weather can often have other ideas and rough seas are of course part of life on a ship, and therefore all equipment on board needs to be accordingly robust.

OptimusRW with its IP65 rating and reinforced form factor provides the durability needed in an application taking place in storage areas or machine rooms where oily hands or rough weather can easily lead to a unit being dropped. This along with its excellent functionality and price point made OptimusRW the clear choice for AIDA, who are using the unit primarily for inventory purposes. Everything loaded onto the ship is itemised and logged using Optimus, and added to the ships inventory. OptimusRWs user friendly software development tools ensured that a tailored application could be generated by AIDAs software partner.

Each of the four AIDA Club cruise liners is equipped with fi ve or six devices and the new AIDAbela, which will be launched in 2008, will have six OptimusRW on board. These WiFi enabled devices are currently being used to download data through standard batch operation. However, AIDA Cruises is testing WLAN operations at present under the appropriately named Cast off programme .

Metrologic wishes AIDA Cruises, Bon Voyage and with OptimusRW providing such an important role behind the scenes, we trust that we help bring a little extra to that famous AIDA smile!
