Avery Dennison, Printer Systems Division, supplier of Monarch products and services, (which acquired Paxar Corporation in June 2007), has announced it is working with Wynsors, a multiple footwear retailer with 30 stores in North West England, for shelf edge labeling and markdowns.

Wynsors wanted to improve its method of producing shelf-edge labels and carrying out markdowns during sales. Its existing process involved printing A4 sheets of shelf edge labels and markdown labels and posting these to individual stores from its head office. Store managers then had the painstaking task of going through these and deciding which labels they could use. Staff would then find the appropriate shoe, tear off the SEL and position it behind the shelf profile strip. The whole process was time-consuming and led to delays in updating prices on the shopfloor.

Wynsors therefore approached Avery Dennison and asked to look at the Pathfinder 6039 to see if it would assist them improve this critical process. Matthew OToole, Account Manager for Avery Dennison agreed to supply a Pathfinder for a trial at its Wigan store, together with some custom made shelf edge labels. Following the success of this trial, the retailer placed an order for 36 x 802.11b wireless Platinums.

The first stage of the new process now involves a user simply having to switch the 6039 on in the morning and load the software. This then checks wirelessly for updates for both the software itself and the PLU (product lookup) files it uses. If it finds that a newer version of the software has been made available, it automatically downloads a copy from the server, installs it and then reboots itself. Similarly, if it sees that new versions of the PLU files are available, it downloads those and updates the Pathfinder. Both processes take a matter of seconds and guarantee that any pricing updates are seamless and efficient. For the rest of the day, any member of staff can then simply select shelf edge or markdown labels from the onscreen menu, scan a shoe and print the correct label.

The result is efficiently produced, high quality, accurate and consistent shelf edge and markdown labels. Nick Green, IT Manager for Wynsors had this to say about the Pathfinder solution: The Pathfinders have given us the flexibility to issue a price mark down and start it immediately without having to wait for the information to arrive at the stores via the postal system.
