UnIQue ID, the automated data capture and mobile computing specialist, has signed a contract to supply an automated hardware and software solution to perform front line data collection applications at a worldwide distribution centre handling 90 million units for worldwide delivery every year. With a client list that includes the publishers Penguin UK, the distribution agent operates a 350,000 square foot warehouse from which over 1.5 million books are shipped each week.
Under the contract, UnIQue ID will supply 80 Dolphin 9550 mobile computers from Hand Held Products which will be used for picking and packing operations, receiving, returns and in the collation of completed orders. Running 5250 emulation, the 9550s connect via WLAN to an IBM iSeries host, making the data available in real time.
Having worked with UnIQue ID in the past, the distribution agent has always been impressed with the level of service that was provided for their label printers. By recommending the 9550, the primary focus was placed on both functionality and durability to ensure the agents are able to maintain 100% connectivity to the back end system, giving real time information and helping contribute to improving customer service levels.
The Dolphin 9550 is a rugged, pistol grip device designed for easy and intuitive one handed use in scan intensive environments. By replacing unreliable legacy hardware, where up to 20 devices could be inoperable at any one time and poor battery life resulted in up to three battery changes taking place during each eight hour shift, the cost of repairs will be lowered and an anticipated return on the hardware investment is expected within two and a half years.
