Global Secure Systems (GSS) in conjunction with the Honda British Formula Four Stroke Powerboat championship, have pushed powerboat racing one step further, by installing the latest rugged WiFi technology on board the AppGate Mermaid powerboat. This will enable an extreme powerboat sport to be experienced and enjoyed by thousands of powerboat fans on land as the action happens.
This technology has been used for the first time at the Torquay Grand Prix pushing the technology team to their limit.
Team AppGate Mermaid raced with a video camera on board, transmitting live video pictures to shore over a standard 802.11 wireless network. This is the first time video has been streamed from a powerboat back to shore using this technology.
The team are using rugged WiFi access points from 3eTI, installed and set up by their UK partner, Global Secure Systems. The teams plan is to push forward and put more WiFi kit on other boats and even on a helicopter to provide crowds at the race meetings live coverage from inside a boat.
Spectators can now get a taste of the thrill of racing onboard a Formula One Four Stroke Powerboat, as the footage is so clear and instant you feel that you are almost participating in the race. said David Hobson, driver of AppGate Mermaid and MD of GSS. It is also a fantastic challenge for my technical guys. The environment inside one of these boats is extreme in the extreme! The boats are only 21 feet long, and race at speeds of up to 55 mph. and bounce around a lot!
