Symbol Mobile Computers and Bar Code Scanners Provide Real Time Data Access and Improve Data Accuracy

Symbol Technologies, Inc. (NYSE:SBL), The Enterprise Mobility Company(tm), today announced that Nestl, an international food company, has deployed Symbol mobile computers and bar code scanners in its two Czech production plants, Zora Olomouc and Sfinx Holeov, as well as in one Slovak plant and in the warehouses of subsidiary Schller. As part of Nestl's implementation of SAP as its new ERP solution, Symbol mobile computers and scanners will enable reliable warehouse tracking of the raw materials contained in products to meet EU legal requirements. Prior to the new system, traceability records were potentially vulnerable to human error as the company relied on a manual solution using paper-based forms.

Nestl needed a pan-European supplier for all the hardware for the new solution and in the Czech Republic, Kodys s.r.o, a Symbol partner, was chosen based on their experience, strong position in the market and professional services capabilities. While price was an important consideration, technical support, installation and training were also essential. Kodys s.r.o was required to not only supply the equipment, but also service it during the five years of its operational lifespan.

Nestl has deployed more than150 Symbol mobile devices including 20 vehicle/fixed mount mobile computers, 40 rugged MC9000 mobile computers, 60 LS3408ER rugged bar code scanners, and P370 RF scanners. Symbol's innovative technology collects and transfers information in real-time using barcodes and additional quantitative data, which is manually added using a keyboard either from a PC or the Symbol mobile computers. Information, such as the name of the product, production series, shift it was produced in, and country of manufacture is printed onto pallet labels according to GS1 relevant standards.

"The mobility that Symbol and Kodys have brought to us is a huge advantage as it allows important information, such as details of pallets in the warehouse, to be entered immediately into our systems, which increases data accuracy," says Petr Trefil, IT manager of Nestl Cesko.

In addition to tracking raw materials, the system also records all goods, packaging, semi-finished products and finished products produced in the plants. The new system has also greatly improved record accuracy, enabled faster data capture and provisioning, and provided data availability in real time.

Nestl has also purchased a Symbol Service from the Start Bronze service contract which gives the company support from Symbol's service centre in Brno, including a guarantee that equipment will be repaired within three days.

Trefil has been extremely pleased with Symbol's reliability, adding, "the best part is I don't have to worry about it - it just works! We haven't had any problems with the Symbol equipment and we haven't even needed to use the technical support yet, which is a weight off my mind."
