SECURSTORE PROTECTS THE UKS BAR CODES

SecurStore has announced that it is delivering online backup to GS1 UK, the independent supply chain standards body, as part of its new strategy for offsite backup and disaster recovery. GS1 UK is part of the worldwide GS1 network, which specialises in cross-sector supply chain standards for bar coding, RFID. GS1 UK backups up the data pool for the UKs bar-coding, RFID members (radio frequency tags) and critical data from over 18,000 clients in the UK. GS1 UK was previously using a tape-based backup solution but as part of its new disaster recovery (DR) plan looked for an offsite backup solution that maintains uptime whilst protecting the critical data.

GS1 UK stores and backs up a database of barcode information that is unique worldwide. The barcode numbers act as a link to information held on the database about each product line, company, location, shipping unit or asset that is being identified. If a barcode is missing from the database, the product it identifies can not be scanned in and subsequently can not be legally sold by retailers and distributors. Provisioning for business continuity was therefore essential to GS1 UK, which is now using the SecurStore solution to perform backups on all critical data, including the barcode and RFID data. The data is stored offsite at SecurStores data centre.

Our clients need to be able to access the information at all times and we could no longer continue with unreliability of tape backup, which lacked security and had slow restoration times, commented Mohamed Morsi, IT Manager at GS1 UK. With SecurStore it is the opposite we have a guarantee of secure offsite protection and that critical client data is accessible if our systems go down. The bare metal technology ensures SecurStore can restore our data within minutes, reducing our downtime significantly from tape-backup. Implementation of the new software was straightforward, and initial setup of the client software was so easy that we did not need technical help from SecurStore.

SecurStores technology incorporates bare metal restore (BMR) and message level restore (MLR) functionality, as well as continuous data protection (CDP), giving GS1 UK the confidence that their business continuity is assured at all times.

Alexander Eirksson, President of SecurStore, said, Maintaining uptime and safety of data was GS1 UKs main concern. With SecurStores restore functionality we are able to guarantee GS1 UK a short downtime, with the critical client and barcode data recoverable within minutes. With SecurStore, GS1 UK benefits from faster and reliable data backup and has the assurance of a reliable disaster recovery procedure that will ensure business continuity with minimal effect on GS1 UKs clients.

SecurStore is suitable for businesses that need to protect data from a few gigabytes to terabytes. The service ensures that any data held on PCs, file servers and application/database servers is securely backed up. SecurStore supports many platforms including Windows NT/2000/2003/XP along with AS-400 iSeries, Unix and Linux. SecurStore can also protect a wide range of databases including Oracle, SQL, Exchange, Lotus Notes and DB2.
