Unitech, the third largest worldwide manufacturer of rugged PDAs, has announced a collaboration with Sierra Wireless to deliver 3G/UMTS wireless connectivity to its devices via the AirCard 850 wireless wide area network (WWAN) card.  Unitech is one of the first vendors offering UMTS.

Initially the AirCard 850 will be introduced with the PA962, Unitechs rugged handheld mobile computer designed for field service, retail, transportation, warehousing and logistics applications.  The PA962 has been designed with a PCMCIA slot for quick and easy upgrading of new technologies, such as the AirCard.  Plans to integrate the AirCard 850 card with other devices will be announced in due course.

The AirCard 850 will enable the PA962 to transfer data wirelessly at high speed via HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) capable UMTS networks.  The card supports the 2100 MHz UMTS frequency commonly used across Europe and Asia.  The AirCard 850 also connects to EDGE/GPRS/GSM networks across all four frequency bands used worldwide, enabling remote workers to have wireless data communications wherever there is network coverage.

Fast, reliable real-time data transfer is critical to companies operating in field service, transport and logistics markets.  Field workers and drivers can have their schedules updated on the fly, signatures can be captured and automatically sent as proof of delivery to the dispatcher and invoices can be raised the minute a job is completed.  The efficiency gains that can be realised not only offer competitive advantage but also help to reduce costs and improve services levels.

Raymond Wolfert, Sales & Marketing Manager, comments Peak 3G data transmission rates can reach up to 1.8Mbps on an HSDPA capable network.  Reliability and coverage has improved greatly, and the speed offered and the amount of data that can be handled by 3G is nearly comparable to Broadband connections, which is resulting in the development of new data rich remote worker applications.  Unitech is keen to ensure that its mobile computers support this new technology and our collaboration with Sierra Wireless enables us to do this.
