New mobile  printer enables on the move payment processing and ticketing both inside and out

Zebra Technologies, the  provider of global on-demand printing solutions, has launched the RW 220, a  rugged mobile thermal printer for both indoor and outdoor receipt printing and  payment processing.

A smaller version of the popular RW 420, the RW  220 has been designed for printing tickets or receipts up to two inches wide.  It will help improve customer service and sales particularly in retail outlets  by enabling sales staff to take payment anywhere on the shop floor. Also, the  mobile printer will allow sales assistants to print personalised coupons for  loyalty card holders based on their own unique shopping requirements on a  particular day.

Ideal for mobile outdoor workers, the IP 54-rated RW  220 withstands exposure to water and dust, and can resist extreme temperature  and repeated six-foot drops onto concrete. It supports advanced security  standards, including WPA and virtual private network (VPN) access.

With  optional magnetic stripe and smart card readers for credit, debit and loyalty  card processing  the printer also has Bluetooth and 802.11b wireless  connectivity. Zebra also offers special paper designed to withstand hot and  cold temperatures, sunlight and UV light, and the rigours of outdoor  conditions.

Key features of the RW 220  include:

  • a 32-bit processor for fast processing of receipts with graphics or  complex 2D barcodes
  • a snap-in-vehicle mounting cradle
  • 4MB Flash and 8MB RAM
  • USB 2.0 as standard
  • Advanced and secure wireless communication large media capacity
  • an AC charger, Quad charger and cigarette-lighter adapter charger  for in-vehicle charging

As wireless technology comes into its own, its  imperative that retailers have the right printers to exploit it on the shop  floor, said Rod Rodericks, managing director, EMEA, at Zebra Technologies.  The RW 220 is not only sufficiently lightweight for comfortable handheld use,  but it has advanced wireless security and ruggedness meaning that it is  suitable not only for in store retail applications but also out on the road.  All mobile workers, from utility engineers to police and parking attendants to  e-commerce delivery people, can use the RW 220 to print receipts and other  real-time documentation without having to worry about the printer getting  damaged or failing to perform in outdoor conditions.
