INTEL AND FUJITSU EUROPE TEAM UP TO BRING 2.5" SERIAL ATA HARD DISK DRIVE PERFORMANCE WITHIN THE REACH OF NOTEBOOK USERS

Fujitsu, one of the world's leading suppliers of hard disk drives and computer peripherals, today announced its special promotion for 2.5" Serial ATA (SATA) hard disk drives. Fujitsu developed its 2.5 inch SATA drives to address growing demands for mobile hard disk drives with the speed and capacity required for high-end audio/video computing in applications such as gaming, video editing, audio recording, DVR and storage, along with a wide array of related applications. These drives are available now in capacities of 40, 60, 80 and 100GB with 120 and 160GB to be available at the end of the year.

Following more than four years of SATA development on the 2.5" platform, the latest Fujitsu mobile hard disk drives offer low power consumption, increased capacity, high shock tolerance, and quiet operation. With this announcement Fujitsu and Intel have taken a giant step toward closing the perfomance and capacity disparities that exist between desktop PC and notebook hard disk drives to accomodate users that are increasingly migrating from aging desktop systems to newer high-performance notebook computers. These drives also feature a hardware accelerator that maximises Native Command Queuing (NCQ) performance, an important feature that enables the hard disk drive controller to intelligently and simultaneously queue and reorder up to 32 instructions, resulting in a significant improvement in overall hard disk drive performance.

"Over the last few years the computing industry has seen a steady and dramatic transition from desktop PCs to notebook computers - Currently 30% of the Total Available Market (TAM) for PCs is notebooks. We predict that figure will jump to 43% by 2007," said Maurits Tichelman, EMEA Sales Director, Intel. He continued "Intel has been working steadfastly to bring higher performance into the notebook without having to sacrifice longer battery life. The introduction of the Intel Centrino mobile technology Next Generation Platform earlier this year is our latest offering".

Intel Centrino mobile technology Next Generation Platform advances the vectors of mobility with its breakthrough mobile performance with the Intel Pentium M processor based on 533MHz FSB, enhanced wireless lan connectivity and outstanding graphics performance and system level enhancements (DDR2 support, Intel High Definition Audio, support for indusry latest SATA harddrive and optical drives).

"Fujitsu has established itself as the leader in the 2.5" SATA hard disk drive space, delivering the industry's first 2.5" SATA hard disk drive in January 2004. Since that time Fujitsu has continued to deliver hard disk drives with increased capacity for improved performance while partnering with pioneering companies to bring next-generation SATA solutions to market." said Andrew Batty, Director of Sales and Marketing, Fujitsu Europe.

In addition, the latest Fujitsu MHV series of hard disk drives are RoHS compliant. RoHS is the European Union's directive for eliminating certain hazardous materials in the manufacturing of electrical and electronic equipment. They are available through original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and distributors now.
