ONStor Inc., the leader in enterprise-class NAS Gateway solutions for multi-vendor storage, today announced that North West Geomatics Ltd., (North West) a leading aerial data acquisition and geospatial data content provider has installed two Bobcat NAS Gateways, displacing more than a dozen Microsoft Windows servers and preserving the companys current investment in its storage area network and high-capacity storage arrays. Compared with a solution proposed by NetApp, ONStors open-storage architecture saved the company over 70% by allowing them to make better use of their existing equipment.
Based in Calgary, Alberta, North West is dedicated to providing high-quality aerial data acquisition services and related geospatial data content for use by mapping firms, online mapping resources, government agencies and other organizations. To capture data, the company employs a fleet of aircraft, each generating between 150GB and 500GB of data in a typical flight day. North Wests data center currently houses more than 120TB of information on disk.
Storage for this ever-increasing amount of geospatial information was previously provided by Windows file servers that were attached to a storage area network consisting of many external RAID arrays. What was initially a cost-effective approach was becoming unwieldy as operating costs rose and data availability declined due to the requirement to implement frequent security patches and updates to the operating system. Also, additional Windows servers were needed for approximately every 10 terabytes of storage to maintain performance expectations.
We needed to consolidate our data storage to improve uptime, reduce costs and accommodate our rapid growth, said John Welter, vice president of North West. After evaluating solutions from NetApp, Panasas, Isilon and Polyserve, we selected ONStor NAS Gateways for their scalability, availability and exceptional performance. Most importantly, ONStor offered the only NAS solution that allowed us to re-use our existing storage, which saved us over 70% compared to a NetApp solution.
ONStor offers the industrys most interoperable NAS solution, which allowed North West to deploy a NAS environment using the storage area network and arrays already in place. This saved them the substantial expense of buying the proprietary storage commonly associated with other NAS solutions.
North West was shocked by the high cost of conventional NAS solutions, and needed an alternative that would deliver scalable, highly available NAS storage at a reasonable cost, said Jon Toor, vice president of marketing at ONStor. ONStor NAS Gateways let North West re-use existing assets, which saved cost and reduced the complexity of the new solution. ONStors open storage approach provided significant savings when compared with proprietary NAS solutions.
ONStor NAS Gateways allow the consolidation of storage from multiple Windows, Linux and UNIX storage servers into a single, highly scalable environment. As the first enterprise-class NAS architecture to seamlessly scale from 1 terabyte to 40,000 terabytes of capacity with no user disruption and no data migration, ONStor NAS Gateways provide one-touch management features including performance provisioning functionality that enables transparent workload migration for load balancing, failover and performance scaling.
