MGE UPS SYSTEMS INTRODUCES A LINUX USB INTERFACE FOR UPS' AND GAINS WIDESPREAD SUPPORT IN LINUX DISTRIBUTIONS

High availability power solutions provider MGE UPS SYSTEMS, a major contributor to the Network UPS Tools (NUT) Open Source project, is now delivering USB drivers for connecting UPS' under Unix/Linux. This complements the UPS Network Management System which is also 100% compatible with Unix and Linux.

MGE's involvement in the Open Source community enables it to provide support for UPS systems through partnerships with the key players in the Linux world. MGE is a Debian partner, a Mandrakesoft Technology partner, a Novell Silver Technology partner for SUSER and a Redhat Ready partner for UPS systems dedicated to high availability networks.

MGE joined Network UPS Tools (NUT) in 2001. "The project was considered to be the most promising for supporting UPS systems under Linux," said Jason Koffler, UK Channel Manager. "NUT version 1.0.0 and the modules for serial port communications and SNMP were released in 2002. It took about two more years with several projects carried out in parallel to arrive at complete, standardised support for connecting UPS' to the USB port, as the USB structure (HID) is more complex for uninterruptible power supplies."

UPS systems are ready for the Linux server market, forecast to grow by 22.8% per annum. As server farms are now the most critical Linux systems protected by one or more UPS' with network management, MGE has for many years provided "Network Shutdown Module", a powerful, comprehensive network management solution that was developed and is fully supported by MGE.

"This program is also available for other operating systems such as Windows, UNIX and MacOS and provides a very simple means of managing the power supply to heterogeneous systems with a high availability supply from a single UPS, " explains Patrick Brouhon, MGE UPS SYSTEMS Networks Market Director.

MGE UPS SYSTEMS has seconded a dedicated development engineer to the NUT project and hosts the project on its server. Much has been achieved since August 2001, including comprehensive support for all MGE UPS', from the oldest to the most recent, by active contribution to the development of the NUT drivers; improvement of the NUT architecture in collaboration with the NUT project leaders, and support for various NUT related projects (Linux USB/HID subsystem, libhid, WMNut, KnutClient, etc).

MGE continues to support the NUT initiative through the libhid project to support UPS' communicating via USB under Linux and all Unix systems, by donating the MGE UPS SYSTEMS HID parsing program under GPL licence and by helping to integrate NUT into Linux distributions and other versions of Unix, supporting the creation of new graphic interfaces (GUIs).
