ADAPTEC TOPS 10 PETABYTES IN STORAGE SHIPMENTS

Adaptec, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADPT), a global leader in storage solutions, today announced that it has topped 10 petabytes in shipments of storage enough to house five times the data in all U.S. academic research libraries since entering the market for external storage products over a year ago.

The shipment milestone comes as Adaptec prepares to expand its suite of cost-effective arrays for direct-attached and networked storage with the introduction next week of the Adaptec FS4500DR-AC, a highly scalable, high-availability RAID subsystem. The array combines Fibre Channel scalability with Serial ATA disk drives to give organizations a cost-effective way to expand Fibre Channel infrastructures for storage of reference information such as electronic documents, presentations, email, graphics, CAD/CAM designs and medical images.

The FS4500DR-AC builds on a family of Adaptec external storage subsystems that include an array for low-cost, easy-to-manage IP SANs and an award-winning application-specific backup appliance.

Organizations working to manage rapid data growth under tight IT budgets need cost-effective, easy-to-use storage solutions that deliver high levels of data protection, capacity scalability and performance, said Ram Jayam, a vice president and general manager at Adaptec. Adaptec is setting new storage standards for ease of use and price-performance to meet the needs of these customers.

Customers Laud Adaptec Storage

Organizations across a range of industries are using Adaptec Storage to enable fast data growth and for applications including backup. New England Biolabs, a leading provider of molecular biology research, deployed the highly scalable Adaptec SANbloc, a RAID subsystem with Fibre Channel storage, to keep pace with a database growing at 25 percent a year.

Adaptec allowed us to do things we couldnt do before and at one-fourth the cost of a comparable system offered by a former vendor, said Ruben Melo, information systems manager at New England Biolabs.

Increasing costs to protect and manage data for its 55,000 end users threatened to price SawTel out of key market segments until the satellite bandwidth provider, which for years had relied on traditional SANs, turned to the Adaptec iSA1500 Storage Array, an appliance that combines iSCSI connectivity for IP SANs with low-cost Serial ATA disk storage.

We expect hard storage costs to run one-sixth of what we were spending before, which is huge, said SawTel chief technology officer Eric Koffie-Asare as the company gears up to deploy an Adaptec IP SAN.

The Electronic Access Department of Orange County, Florida, deployed the Adaptec File Saver ESA1500 when it needed a plug-and-play appliance to back up security data on disk drives in several databases. Adaptec File Saver enabled us to set up an in-house network for our five databases and deploy a fail-safe system for automated data backups, said Ron Gawlik, the divisions East District maintenance supervisor. Whats more, installation and setup was a snap it took just five minutes.
