3Com Corporation (Nasdaq: COMS) has announced new enhancements to its OfficeConnect family of wireless products. 3Com has added the Turbo Mode feature on its OfficeConnect 11a/b/g wireless access points and client devices to give users an increase in high-speed wireless from 54 Mbps up to 108 Mbps. Turbo Mode wireless extensions offer customers the most current in high-speed wireless options amid evolving wireless market trends. 3Com also enhanced its OfficeConnect Wireless 11a/b/g access points with the Wireless Distribution System (WDS), a flexible product feature that allows business customers to build a completely wireless infrastructure without connecting equipment to a wired local area network (LAN).

"We are constantly enhancing and updating 3Coms wireless products, ensuring that we offer our customers one of the strongest choices in wireless network offerings on the market today, said Neal Kaufman, director of small business product management, 3Com. Our 3Com wireless products combine sophisticated enterprise-class features with the same ease-of-use, advanced security and affordability for which our small and medium-sized business customers have come to expect from us. In addition, larger enterprise customers, who are using 3Coms high-end enterprise wireless products, can use our OfficeConnect products at small office remote sites for high-speed wireless connectivity.

3Com OfficeConnect Wireless Gets Turbocharged with Turbo Mode Extensions The Turbo Mode feature, which is already supported on 3Coms enterprise-class Wireless LAN Access Point 8750, 8250 7250 and 11a/b/g wireless PC adapters, and now implemented in the OfficeConnect wireless products, give small business users the opportunity to take advantage of the jump from 54 Mbps to double the speed. Instead of forcing customers to pick one type of wireless standard over another, 3Com supports Turbo Mode extensions across its tri-mode 802.11 products. The enhanced wireless network delivers more bandwidth to speed up the performance of demanding business applications for mobile workers.

Linking Multiple Wireless Access Points Using WDS Links

The Wireless Distribution System is a feature that allows the set-up of wireless networks by linking several wireless access points with WDS links. This type of set-up alleviates the need to connect the wireless network into a wired LAN. It is ideal for open areas where wiring (or re-wiring) is cost-prohibitive, restricted or physically impossible. The access points act as wireless bridges, establishing the connections and using proven 3Com wireless security technology to ensure reliable wireless security in the standalone network.

Pricing and Availability

The new features will be available as standard features on new applicable versions of OfficeConnect products. Software updates are now available on 3Coms Web site for existing customers to download. The OfficeConnect hardware product with the new software built-in is expected to start shipping later in June.
