2 What role does automation play in the manufacturing supply chain?

In broad terms, automation is a term for technology applications with minimal human input. Whereas automation capabilities may have been regarded as science fiction at one point in the past, it is now definitely coming of age, especially in the supply chain realm.

Manufacturing IT

Information technology, is playing an increasingly important role in manufacturing operations. IT can be used to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality across the manufacturing process.

Here are some of the ways that IT is being used in manufacturing operations:

  • Computer-aided design (CAD) software is used to design new products and parts. CAD software allows engineers to create detailed 3D models of products, which can then be used to simulate the manufacturing process and identify potential problems.
  • Computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software is used to control machine tools and other manufacturing equipment. CAM software allows manufacturers to automate the manufacturing process, which can lead to increased productivity and accuracy.
  • Enterprise resource planning (ERP) software is used to integrate all of the different aspects of a manufacturing operation into a single system. ERP software can help manufacturers to track inventory, manage orders, and plan production.
  • The Industrial Internet of Things (IoT) is a network of physical devices that are connected to the internet. The IoT can be used to collect data from manufacturing equipment and sensors, which can then be used to improve efficiency, productivity, and quality.
  • 3D printing is a process of creating physical objects from digital designs. 3D printing can be used to create prototypes, custom parts, and even finished products.

Automation IT

IT automation is the use of software and systems to replace repeatable processes and reduce manual intervention. It accelerates the delivery of IT infrastructure and applications by automating manual processes that previously required a human touch. Some of the most common types of IT automation:

  • Task automation: This type of automation automates simple, repetitive tasks that are typically done manually. For example, a task automation script could be used to automatically create new user accounts or to send out email notifications.
  • Process automation: This type of automation automates more complex processes that involve multiple steps. For example, a process automation tool could be used to automate the deployment of a new application or to handle the provisioning of new servers.
  • Workflow automation: This type of automation automates the flow of work between different people or systems. For example, a workflow automation tool could be used to automate the approval process for a new expense report or to track the progress of a customer service ticket.
