Power management company Eaton has launched new 2.2 kW and 3 kW versions of its 9PX series UPSs, which are claimed to be ideally suited for providing high quality power protection for virtual servers, hyperconverged solutions, networking devices and small data storage systems.
A key feature of these innovative UPS products is the unity power factor, which means that for a given rating they can power more equipment than conventional UPSs. The products also distinguish themselves through exceptionally high efficiency, which reduces energy costs and cooling requirements. In addition, they are available in optional network versions that support advanced virtualisation capabilities.
Eaton's new 9PX UPSs are available in 2U versions, which make effective use of space in conventional deep IT racks, and 3U versions, which are ideally suited for use in smaller enclosures with restricted depth, or to protect conventional tower IT devices.
"These new UPSs bring the benefits of our larger 9PX products, which have proved very successful and popular, to smaller applications," said Christophe Jammes, Product Marketing Manager at Eaton EMEA.
"Unity power factor is, for example, something that's very important to our customers, as it means the kVA rating of the UPS is numerically identical to the kW rating of the load it can supply. As a result, users can get more useful power out of their UPS – typically 11% more – and calculations are no longer needed to work out the size of the load the UPS can support."
The new UPS systems feature dual-conversion topology that provides effective protection against all types of power quality problems, and they incorporate automatic bypass to maintain power to the load in the event of overloads or UPS faults.
Eaton 9PX UPSs are Energy Star qualified and, when operating in on-line mode, they can achieve an efficiency of 94%, which helps to keep running costs and environmental impact to a minimum.
All models have a built-in LCD display that provides full status information and operational analytics, together with energy consumption monitoring down to group outlet level. Load segment control is provided for up to two groups, facilitating sequential start-ups, prioritised shutdown of non-essential equipment and remote rebooting of locked up servers.
Eaton's Advanced Battery Management (ABM) system extends battery life by up to 50% and, when the batteries eventually do need replacing, the hot-swap functionality means this can be done without interrupting the supply of power to the loads.
Virtualisation-ready network versions of the new 9PX UPSs offer close integration with VMware, HyperV, RedHat and Citrix virtual environments, making it easy to implement automated disaster recovery policies for power events and load-shedding functionality. On top of that, the 9PX can also be monitored through the popular cloud orchestrator VMWare vRealize and Microsoft MS SCOM.
The new 9PX UPS model substitutes the EX 2200/3000 UPS which transitioned to End-of-Life on 30 June, 2016.
