Maxatec is forging ahead with its range of Android 4 compatible rugged portable computers that can provide rapid return on investment. The company now offers three devices that utilise the most popular mobile operating system worldwide. With Android taking the mobile world by storm with its ease of use and flexibility, it is making inroads into the corporate environment too.

Companies are realising Android's power, utility and user-friendliness can make it ideal for deploying rugged handheld devices equipped with a familiar operating system that their workforce already understands because they use it with their mobile phones.

Among the Android 4 products are the Bluebird Pidion HM45 rugged smartphone, BP50 7-in tablet PC and larger BP70 10.1-in business pad. All feature a waterproof TankSmith™ design in addition to their high IP rating, making them far superior to consumer grade Android devices that are not suitable for long-term use in demanding environments.

"Maxatec is one of the first rugged IT distributors able to offer a range of Android-based handheld computers – and we can provide the mobile printing technology to accompany them too. Android take up is gaining momentum in industrial applications and we are ready to provide reliable, well designed and engineered, cost-effective equipment that can capitalise on this trend," says Tom Abbott, Director of Mobile Enterprise, Maxatec.

"What makes the Pidion Android range stand out is that all the devices are fully rugged – they don't need ruggedizing with additional heavy duty and sealed cases! Although there is a whole host of complementary accessories, the HM45, BP50 and BP70 don't rely on protective cases or covers for security against drops, knocks and the elements. They are all also designed for industrial applications and not for consumers and this makes them very cost-effective, because by the time you have re-engineered a consumer grade product and added the functionality needed to suit the job it can cost a lot more than expected."

Editors' Notes

The HM45 IP54 smartphone features a dual-core CPU and coupled with a large battery and its low power consumption, it will run all day long before it needs recharging. Communication options include 3.5 G/HSPA+ for voice and wide area data, WIFI for local area networks and Bluetooth to connect to other local devices. It also features GPS navigation so there is no need for an additional Sat-Nav. The 3.5-inch touchscreen can be used for finger or stylus input, is viewable from all angles and works under sunlight. It features true barcode scanning and image capture and can be used for 1D and 2D barcodes. The decoding software will also read damaged barcodes.

The Bluebird Pidion BP70 offers a wealth of features and functionality in a slim, lightweight 757 g, and rugged IP65 10.1-inch design. The BP70 is equipped with unique Eyelluminate™ display technology, which is a close bonding of the Corning® Gorilla Glass® touch screen with the LCD. This provides a clear view in all light conditions, whether inside or out, which improves productivity.

The long battery life is achieved using an energy efficient yet powerful dual core processor. This enables the Pidion BP70 to handle any application and do it efficiently without a sudden drop in battery performance.  The device also offers connectivity to various data capture devices, including magnetic stripe, smart card, barcode and NFC readers. It has 802.11 for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth for peripherals and 4G LTE for remote connectivity to the office from the field. Any data held or transmitted from the device is secure thanks to the proprietary Stonewall Security™ feature. In addition, any device that is stolen or lost can be decommissioned remotely using mobile device management software.

The 4G-ready Pidion BP50 7-inch Android tablet PC is an ideal multi-purpose mobile computing device covering everything from communications, data collection and navigation. Users will quickly take to the familiar user friendly design and premium 7-inch Eyelluminate™ LCD that is viewable from all angles even in bright sunlight. The device offers a range of data capture interfaces, has a 5MP camera, Wi-Fi, 3G and 4G connectivity and GPS.
