'Just Google it' – Celebrating fifteen searchable years

Fifteen years ago last week, Google made its debut appearance on the screens of desktops and laptops. Since then it has had an almost unimaginable impact on our daily lives, particularly the way we access information, and earned its place in the dictionary in the process.

Driven by its aim "to organise the world's information" Google's role in increasing access to the internet's material has been compounded by the proliferation of mobile technology – which has added an "anywhere" to the "anything" of the search engine.

Carin van Vuuren, CMO at Usablenet, the mobile and multichannel technology provider, comments: "Not only has Google been at the forefront of an information revolution, it has reshaped the purchasing landscape for customers and businesses alike. By making it faster and easier than ever to locate information on the internet, it has rightfully made customers more confident in finding local products or businesses and less tolerant of clumsy navigation and experiences that bear little relevance to the context of their search. This is particularly compounded when searching on mobile devices.

As a result, businesses are recognising the need to provide streamlined and tailored online experiences that respond to the demand for speed, convenience and security across all platforms. Furthermore, Google's innovation in areas such as mobile payments, with its Google Wallet, means it continues to set the standard, helping to drive the digital customer experience to new levels."
