Following an overwhelming majority vote from its membership, the Institute for the Management of Information Systems (IMIS), has ratified its decision to merge with BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, with immediate effect. The agreement will see all IMIS professional members transfer into BCS membership.
The move will see the two organisations work jointly to further maintain standards and enhance the reputation of the profession so that it is recognised alongside the more traditional professions of law, engineering etc.
BCS Group Chief Executive David Clarke, MBE, says: "We are delighted to be welcome IMIS into the BCS group. This is a natural fit and reinforces both of our agendas to promote and represent the IT profession across the globe. Today IT is central to society and business, therefore it is important that we establish standards for those currently working in the profession, encourage the next generation to consider IT as a future career choice and raise awareness among the general public of the importance of the profession."
Professor Simon Rogerson, Chair, IMIS Council adds: "In deciding upon this merger we believe that together our organisations will offer the best opportunity for members to continue to meet their academic, professional and career requirements. This is a landmark event for the industry. It is a real opportunity to make a positive difference for society in general."
By joining forces, the two professional Institutes intend to bring a stronger united voice to policy decisions that affect the future development of the industry within the international community and deliver a wider range of services to their combined membership base.
IMIS, a registered charity, works to foster greater understanding of the importance of information systems management, working to enhance the status of those engaged in the profession and promote global higher standards through education and training.
BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, also a registered charity, promotes wider social and economic progress through the advancement of information technology science and practice. It brings together industry, academics, practitioners and government to share knowledge, promote new thinking, inform the design of new curricula, shape public policy and inform the public.
