Heavey RF backs Psion Omnii platform with initial 400-unit XT10 purchase

Psion PLC has announced that Heavey RF, provider of mobilesolutions using radio frequency (RF) technology, has endorsed Psion'sOpen Source Mobility (OSM) strategy with an initial purchase of 400devices for its operations in the UK and Ireland. It is focusing onupgrading its existing customers to the new devices.

Along-standing platinum partner of Psion, the company is leading the wayin the provision of Omnii modules, which alongside OSM, is enablingHeavey RF to extend its current business model in new and excitingways. With modularity and Psion's OSM strategy, Heavey RF now keeps themost common modules in stock and can build customers a device in housein a matter of minutes.

"It's true to say that Psion, OSM andOmnii have enhanced our business because they enable us to give ourcustomers an increased level of flexibility, technology choice as wellas rapid, customised service," explained Rob Garrett, Managing Directorof Heavey RF UK. "Thanks to Psion Omnii, we can now meet most of ourcustomer's requirements with off the shelf product. Things likekeyboard, scanners, screens and pistol grip can be added to an Omniidevice to meet the order requirements, instead of waiting 4 to 6 weeksfor a similar product from another manufacturer."

With devicesfrom other manufacturers, partners like Heavey RF would be stuck withthe standard configuration unless they could wait for a re-manufactureor expensive upgrade of a device. With Psion's Omnii platform, mostcustomer requirements can be met within the course of a business day.

"Omniiis truly transformative for our business," says Garrett. "We can nowbuild a complete unit out of our own stock. This not only dramaticallyreduces demand on our supply chain; it equally dramatically cuts ourtime to revenue. We can now build products to precise specificationsand if that particular customer's needs change, we can bring the sameunit back and rebuild it equally fast right in our own workshops."

Heavey RF now also offers module-based repairs and is even able to provide on-site upgrades for the first time.

Thecompany says it is only just beginning to appreciate the value thatOmnii is bringing to its business. It's helping us evolve our businessmodel and give our customers the benefit of enhanced responsiveness andflexibility.

"Normally, when a company releases a new productyou face compromises. Not with Psion. Not only has the company given usan exciting new way of doing business with the capabilities thatmodularity brings, they have also provided a product in the XT10 thatdramatically improves on key components, such as improved battery, scanners and screens," said Garrett. "We couldn't ask for more from avendor."
