Absolute Software Corporation, the provider of firmware-based, patented, computer theft recovery, data protection and secure computer lifecycle management solutions, has announced that its SaaS computer tracking solution Computrace now includes Remote File Retrieval. With this new data leakage prevention (DLP) feature, IT administrators can use the Computrace cloud to identify and retrieve sensitive company files that are exposed on end point devices. This can be done proactively to mitigate the risk of data loss, or as an emergency response action on missing or stolen devices prior to remotely wiping the hard drive for complete corporate data security.

In addition to being an exciting new security feature in Computrace, the Remote File Retrieval (RFR) feature can be an essential productivity tool. For example, a travelling executive works on a confidential PowerPoint presentation on the plane, but leaves her laptop in a cab on the way to her hotel. Once notified, IT may be able to remotely retrieve the lost file and send it to the executive in time for her partner meetings.

"Our customers deploy Computrace for two main reasons: better day-to-day tracking for improved policy, compliance, risk and device management and the ability to reach out and take action on those devices in an emergency such as a device loss or theft," said Rob Chase, chief operating officer at Absolute Software. "Our customers have always enjoyed the fact that Computrace could track and secure computers via the cloud, even when they are outside the corporate network. In today's increasingly mobile world, it is essential to maintain visibility and control over all your computers. Remote File Retrieval provides an essential cloud tool to protect corporate data that might be at risk."

The Remote File Retrieval feature can be easily initiated by Computrace customers 24 hrs a day, 7 days a week via their online Customer Centre portal. Once a file is selected for remote retrieval, the file is unobtrusively downloaded to the secure Absolute Monitoring Centre where it can be accessed by authorised staff.

How Computrace Technology Works
Computrace is powered by Absolute Software patented Computrace persistent technology. When embedded in the firmware of computers from leading computer manufacturers, Computrace can survive operating system re-installations, as well as hard-drive reformats, replacements and re-imaging, helping to ensure that the service is there when you need it most.* Whether in a PC or Mac, the software is virtually undetectable and calls home to the Absolute Monitoring Centre with IT asset management information including location. If a computer is reported stolen, the Absolute Theft Recovery Team works on behalf of the customer to gather evidence from the computer to identify the thief's location, and then works with local police to get the computer back.  Customers can also remotely delete data to help keep it out of the hands of unauthorised users a reliable contingency in case other data protection solutions fail. Computrace can be easily activated by customers when they install a license ranging from 1-3 years.
