John Bean Jr, Director of Innovation and Technology for Racks & Cooling Solutions for APC by Schneider Electric will unveil APC's new containerised fresh air cooling economiser at DatacenterDynamics, Lancaster Hotel, London 9 & 10 November 2010. The new solution combines evaporative, air-to-air heat exchange and DX techniques for optimised system efficiency.

Recent changes to industry guidelines for data centre temperature and humidity have opened the door for the use of alternative cooling methods that were previously only viable in a few geographic locations. These changes render significant new areas of the world able to take advantage of some form of economisation to cool the data centre by utilising outdoor ambient temperatures for heat rejection - free cooling.

Meeting the new opportunity, APC by Schneider Electric is to launch a new system that integrates multiple modes of economisation in a single solution, in order to provide the most efficient form of free cooling according to local conditions. The system will automatically select the most effective mode between indirect evaporation, air to air heat exchange, direct expansion or a combination of all three. The new solution is containerised and can be retro-fitted to service existing CRAC systems.

At the heart of the new solution is an Indirect Evaporative Cooler (IEC) module which segregates the data centre air from the outdoor air. By keeping the airstreams separate, the risk of airborne contamination or excessive moisture changes is eliminated. To further optimise the system efficiency, the use of Electronically Commutated (EC) fan technology is employed for controlling indoor and outdoor air streams, maximising performance while minimising power consumption.
