Dolphin 9700 mobile computer review

Honeywell has introduced the Dolphin 9700, a rugged digital assistant, equipped with  multi-functional data collection and communications capabilities in one reliable, easy-to-use device.

The 9700 allows companies specializing in parcel delivery, route accounting, field services, and healthcare point-of-care applications to better serve their customers, by maximizing worker productivity through innovations that provide increased connectivity, optimized system performance, task-specific ergonomics, and an intuitive user interface.

Housed in a sleek yet rugged design, the device is equipped with multi-media data collection capabilities to ensure that users can capture signatures, as well as full-color images and video. The 9700 is equipped with Honeywells signature Adaptus Imaging Technology for advanced bar code scanning. Automated camera control provides users with full programming control, simplifying camera use with point and shoot functionality that reduces image blur and improves picture quality. Additionally, the Dolphin 9700 is the first mobile computing device to allow bar code scanning and picture taking to occur in the same application, resulting in improved worker productivity. The Dolphin 9700 also has multi-modal communications tools such as instant messenger, e-mail, web browsing, voice-guided navigation and more, making it easier for workers to communicate and stay connected throughout their shifts.

Honeywells customers are becoming more mobile and access to a rugged device that offers real-time communications is becoming increasingly critical for them to carry out their daily operations, said Darius Adamczyk, president of Honeywell Scanning & Mobility. To meet these needs, Honeywell is continuing to invest in products such as the reliable and rugged Dolphin 9700 that allow our customers to do more with one device, enabling increased worker productivity and ultimately reducing operating costs.

The Dolphin 9700 leverages the Microsoft Corp. Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system and a large, 3.7 high-resolution display to ensure easy interaction with the device on a reliable and familiar platform. The rugged mobile computer offers two keypad options to suit its users' needs, a 31-key numeric keypad and full 45-key QWERTY keypad, both with navigation keys specifically placed for easy single-handed use. Additionally, the device has the capability for global high-speed wireless connectivity and location-based solutions for real-time data exchange, connecting users to their customers and internal network in a matter of seconds, regardless of physical location throughout the world.

We are looking forward to continuing our work with Honeywell to create highly connected and rugged devices using Windows Mobile technologies, said Paul Bryan, senior director of business experiences product management in Microsoft Mobile Communications Business. The familiar and intuitive Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system delivers an enhanced touch-friendly interface, improved web browsing functionality and third-party application support on Honeywells Dolphin 9700, enabling users of the Dolphin 9700 to quickly adapt to a reliable, advanced, new device.
Voice connected turn-by-turn navigation and assisted GPS (A-GPS), which improves satellite connection speed and tracking, even in weak signal areas, are two key features of the device, in addition to the multi-media and multi-modal communications, that help workers in the transportation field. Collectively, these features ensure drivers are equipped with the highest degrees of support on one rugged and reliable device, to help with on-time and accurate deliveries.

More of our customers are supplementing their traditional attended point-of-sale lanes with mobile devices to handle traffic in the store during peak hours, as well as traffic at off-site events, stated Gene Cornell, president of Cornell-Mayo Associates. Honeywells new Dolphin 9700 includes substantial improvements over competitive devices, in terms of screen quality, form factor, comfort, battery life and bar code scanning, providing a complete POS solution when used in conjunction with our OPUS Millennium Store System.

The Dolphin 9700 is also available in Honeywells disinfectant-ready housings, which are better able to resist the harsh cleaning chemicals used in healthcare environments. The reliable 9700 helps healthcare providers quickly and accurately perform bedside patient care including medication verification, and more. With the large, bright display, and the high-speed wireless connection, healthcare providers can easily read patient information and quickly transmit it to the patients electronic medical record. Additionally, the comfortable grip and Honeywells Shift-PLUS power management system, which enhances productivity by powering real-time wireless and multi-media applications continuously for 8 hours or more, ensure that nurses have a device to support them throughout their entire shift.
Were very excited about the opportunities were driving with Honeywell as a part of their ISV program, added Cornell. Weve chosen Honeywell as a hardware partner because of the investments theyve made in their mobile computing product line and the tangible benefits of the ISV program.

The 9700 is equipped with Honeywell Scanning & Mobility software tools which assist in the reduction of time and expenses related to development, system integration and asset management, making implementation simple, easy and low cost. Third-party software solutions, including SOTI MobiControl, Naurtech CETerm, PowerNet Twin Client, and ITScriptNet are compatible with the 9700, delivering improved ease of integration, centralized management, and extended functionality.
