Humane bird dispersal solutions specialist Scarecrow Bio-Acoustic Systems has selected the rugged JLT 8404 tablet PC for its advanced vehicle-based airside wildlife management system used by airport operators worldwide.

Scarecrow sourced the 8.4-inch touch screen PC from JLT UK to provide the computing power to run its unique state-of-the-art combination Ultima bio-acoustic distress call and compliant data logging system.

The Ultima bird dispersal system displays a database of bird recognition information, including full screen illustrations to aid species identification on the JLT tablet PC. The intelligent system self-learns the routine of each operator and also remembers the prominent species and the various distress call sound levels previously used at GPS dependant airside locations. The system also logs the dispersal procedures used in real time - logging operator, species, time and date details to provide comprehensive records of work performed. In addition, the inbuilt GPS logs the vehicles airside position from which dispersal took place.

"We were looking for the ultimate mobile computing platform for the Scarecrow Ultima system when we learned of JLT. The rugged JLT 8404 fits the bill precisely providing the reliability, computing power, functionality and connectivity we required in a very tough tablet PC. The Ultima system is vehicle based and spends its time on and off road 24/7, 365 days a year.  Therefore, the system has to be able to withstand punishing conditions and environments," said Tom Diamond, Commercial Director, Scarecrow Bio-Acoustic Systems.

Scarecrow has been producing bird dispersal systems of the highest technical standard for airfields and surrounding areas since 1985. The broadcast of distress calls, as part of an Integrated Bird Management Scheme, has proved effective for bird dispersal, an essential part of flight safety. Scarecrow products, representing state-of-the-art technology to fully meet the challenging task of bird strike avoidance, are approved and used by civil and military airports throughout the world.

The entire range of rugged JLT PCs incorporate an aircraft grade aluminium chassis with a high-tech outer casing that resists chemical attack and provides a waterproof and dust proof seal. All models in the range are subjected to strict testing including water-sealing up to IP67, humidity, vibration, shock and exceed MIL STD 810F.
