Recession could be boom time for Auto-ID predict experts

Zebra Technologies, the on-demand printing solutions provider, has launched an RFID guide to help companies better understand the technology and how it can help during the recession.

The guide, called Think you know RFID?, offers UK companies an insight into the technology and addresses the most common myths associated with it. RFID performs well in a strong economy, but it continues to thrive within the weak economy too, as it widens its reach across a variety of markets, such as retail and logistics, leisure and healthcare.

In the 1990s recession, Auto-ID sales climbed despite high costs, as companies streamlined their objectives. It is likely we will see this again as we stride deeper into the current recession. RFID attracts attention as more businesses demonstrate return on their investments with this technology, said Christine Watts, VP Marketing, EMEA at Zebra Technologies.

Its only a matter of time before we see the development of RFID that has gone on in the US spread to Europe. In response, we have increased discounts were offering RFID specialist partners through our PartnersFirst programme, made upgrades on our existing line of RFID products and launched a new range of RFID printers, continued Watts.

As well as explaining RFID and its expansion, the guide identifies five myths that customers and prospects frequently associate with the technology:

1.   Look forward to 2009: the year RFID really takes off RFID is a technology, which gradually develops over time. However, new applications increase every year and within the mobile technology sphere RFID is really going places

2.   Its all about the mandates: mandates are important but there are a number of other drivers for take-up of the technology

3.   Theyll be tagging your favourite pet nextor even us?: tagging pets with RFID is already happening but RFID chips are certainly not going to be implanted in humans any time soon

4.    The next big thing: in ten years, RFID will have replaced the barcode: RFID will be suitable for some cases, but for others barcodes are better suited

5.    Interference in hospitals? Blame it on the RFID tag: this is scaremongering, RFID is safe, secure and saves hospital employees time as well as resources.

Weve been working with RFID technology for nearly ten years and gained a broad experience of RFID across a variety of industries. We believe RFID compliance has enormous strategic implications for retailers, manufacturers and suppliers, said Watts.

Zebra has worked with many partners and suppliers to help launch RFID technology in their operations. Customers include the US Airforce, Sony Computer Entertainment Group and Heartlands Hospital. Its important that businesses work together across different industries to maximise the potential savings to be made. During tough times we could very well see RFID technology excel, as companies realise its key benefits, concluded Watts.
