A leading Premiership Football Club in a famous street in North London is not exactly the first place you would look for two Zebra D310 400 plastic card printers, but Tottenham Hotspur Football & Athletic Co. Ltd Spurs to you and I are using and getting the best out of them.

Installed some 12 months ago at the Paxton Road Members Club, which sits in the shadow of the legendary White Hart Lane ground, the two machines are used to produce some 36,000 full colour Membership Cards every year.

The bar-coded cards - Adult and Junior Members have their own individually styled cards - are used not only for ID purposes but also for purchasing match tickets over the counter. They were introduced by the club in order to cut down on the labour-intensive data entry originally involved in these processes. Now the bar-code is flashed and the Spurs

Member is instantly identified by their name and Membership number. Members Club Manager, Linda Watkins, who has been with the club for some 18 years - and yes, she is a Spurs fan - is responsible, along with her hardworking team, for every aspect of Club Membership as well as the Newsletter, the sourcing and purchasing of souvenirs and seemingly a hundred and one other things. "When we realised that we had to automate the production of Membership Cards and how we wanted to do it, we asked around amongst our traditional Printing suppliers and DED's name came up", said Linda. "I contacted them, explained what we were trying to do and the rest, as they say, is history.

The D310s with the 400 card capacity hopper have proven themselves very reliable and as the next step forward we are now looking for a larger capacity output stacker, which DED are currently designing for us".

As to whether the Membership Cards will ever need to become 'smart', that is a question for another day, but for now Spurs and DED Limited are very much a winning team.
