62% OF UK RETAIL, DISTRIBUTION AND TRANSPORT ORGANISATIONS LIMITED BY POOR DATA WAREHOUSE PERFORMANCE

Independent Survey Shows Users in the Retail, Distribution and Transport Industries Cannot Maximise Database Capabilities

Kognitio, a leading provider of solutions to business problems that require acquisition, rationalization and analysis of both large and complex data volumes, today unveiled the results of a recent survey carried out across industries such as financial services, manufacturing, distribution and retail by independent market research agency Vanson Bourne. Through this poll of 100 UK senior IT decision-makers, Kognitio aimed to size up the share of organisations that tend to restrict the number and complexity of users' queries on their company data because these place too much strain on the performance of the data warehouse and/or the team supporting it.

Today businesses in the retail and distribution industries generate and store extremely large amounts of data related to their products, customers and logistics. This data represents a great source of competitive information if the value it holds can be extracted. The most effective way to achieve this is to load all the information on a data warehouse and carry out exhaustive queries. However, 62% of the respondents said that they have to restrict such queries as their complexity tends to place too much strain on the performance of the data warehouse or the team running it. Not surprisingly, since the number of employees should not affect the answer significantly, only a further 4% of the respondents who ticked the box work for organisations with more than 3,000 staff. This is possibly due to the fact that businesses in the retail, distribution and transport sectors are heavily reliant on human resources. Another set of respondents, those from the business services, construction and utilities industries said that they feel the strain in 52% of the cases.

'For multiple users to freely query data in a data warehouse requires strong support for concurrent query processing and workload management,' said Mike Ferguson, Managing Director at Intelligent Business Strategies. 'Suppliers of data warehouse DBMS technologies that offer comprehensive support in this area can help organisations empower their business users and leverage the skills of their entire employee base to stay ahead of the competition.'

One way to address this performance issue is through Kognitio's WX2, the most powerful and scalable analytical database in the industry; it enables organisations to query, in detail, vast amounts of granular data in a few seconds. This software-only solution uses high-speed, Massively Parallel Processing (MPP) technology to deliver an extremely fast data mart/warehouse platform to organisations seeking to gain intelligence from their data.

Talking about his need for fast data cataloguing and mining Jim Lewis, senior research associate at the Cambridge (University) Astronomical Survey Unit (CASU) said "Kognitio WX2 has added a new dimension to our approach to data analysis, which it has also dramatically accelerated. The data warehouse is no longer a necessary burden but an invaluable asset for us now."

Kognitio WX2 runs on low-cost non-proprietary, industry-standard hardware and can be scaled to handle hundreds of terabytes of data with performance that delivers answers in real time. This technology delivers the most comprehensive, cost-effective Business Intelligence database platform in the industry and is available as a stand-alone software solution, as a Virtual Data Appliance (VDA), as a BI-in-a-box solution or as a managed service.

"One of the most recurrent issues our customers ask us to address is their data warehouse performance and we like that because we have the most effective solution currently on the market," said Roger Llewellyn, CEO at Kognitio. "Organisations have spent billions of pounds on building very complex databases which they cannot decently query because their data warehouses could not cope. Kognitio's WX2's performance is linear which means that it grows with the size of the database and hence even the most exhaustive and complex of queries will be handled smoothly and quickly."
