Greenwich Instruments Ltd., a developer of Casio mobile technology accessories has released a GPRS backpack for the Casio IT-600.

The GEM600GPRS has been created to add GSM/GPRS functionality to the IT-600 (IT-600M30 and IT-600M30C models).

The design of the module has been carefully managed to ensure that other vital elements such as the camera, barcode scanner and battery compartment are not modified in any way.  A CF card is embedded within the backpack with easy access for a SIM card to be inserted by the user.

Secured very simply by the integrator/user with four fixing screws connecting the backpack to the rear port of the IT-600, the GEM600GPRS is internally sealed with gaskets to avoid moisture and dust ingression.  This option can be fitted to new IT-600 units or as an upgrade path to existing users of the Casio technology.

The main features of the IT-600 which make it particularly suitable for mobile data collection applications include:

  • Rugged design, with IP54 water and dust resistance, for use in challenging environments.
  • Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 OS for reliable and flexible application development.
  • Bright, large VGA colour screen for comfortable viewing indoors or outdoors.
  • MiniSD card slot for extra storage.
  • Integrated, high-performance laser scanner capable of reading industry standard barcodes.
  • 1.0 megapixel camera, with Casio proprietary digital technology for bright photos in low light conditions (IT-600M30C).

Dr Guy Boxall, Divisional Manager of Casio MTD comments that This optional GPRS module provides greater mobility to the IT-600.  It allows a straightforward upgrade path either at the launch of a mobile computing deployment or at some stage in the future when required. This now makes the IT-600 one of the most feature packed, versatile and rugged PDAs available today.

Peter Gifford, Business Development Manager of Greenwich Instruments explains The Greenwich Instruments Ltd., GEM600GPRS module adds the much needed GPRS functionality to the Casio IT-600. Where mobility without loss of GPRS 'back to base' contact is an essential requirement of the task, the GEM600GPRS is the solution.  The GEM600GPRS is simple to install and set up and the embedded Enfora GPRS card, which is a globally tried and tested product, ensures ease of use and excellent GPRS access. Where GPRS 'in the field' communication is needed for the IT-600 the GEM600GPRS meets that need with elegance and reliability.

The GEM600GPRS is compatible with the following IT-600 models: IT-600M30 and IT-600M30C.

The GEM600GPRS backpack will be on show on the Casio stand (G9) at the Retail Solutions show during 5-7th June 2007.
