Equiinet, a leader in appliance devices designed to help small and medium enterprises (SME) make full and effective use of their networks, has launched BackupPilot.

Containing all the necessary hardware and software to ensure an organisation's backup mechanism will work efficiently and effectively, BackupPilot provides a totally automated process, combining 'local' backup together with 'remote' offsite storage accessed over broadband.

While large organisations commonly have significant investment in backup and storage solutions, small to medium sized businesses can often place themselves in a vulnerable position by not having a reliable and effective data backup and recovery strategy for all their critical data. Offsite storage is also an often neglected element.

Equiinet's sophisticated new solution means businesses can ensure that all their data is routinely and comprehensively stored both locally and offsite - doubly secure - as well as being easily recoverable in the event of loss.  BackupPilot makes advanced backup security affordable, dependable and straightforward.

BackupPilot uses an 'agentless' method of communication with PCs and
servers, meaning that there is no requirement for client software to be
installed on any other device on the network, reducing the installation
impact. Also, there is no cost penalty in regards to how many servers and
PCs are to be backed up. Charging is based on the total overall storage
requirements of the business.

Keith Baker, Managing Director, Equiinet, comments "Many rapidly growing
businesses have reached a position where their data is not suitably
protected. Unreliable and difficult to utilise methods such as tapes, or
relying on individual users to copy their PC data over to a server, are
patently ineffective and subject to human error."

"We know of many businesses that have dutifully mounted backup tapes each night only to find them useless when a critical restore was required. It is also amazing how many MDs or top sales people are totally reliant on their laptop - yet backup is the last thing on their mind until data is lost or the laptop stolen."

In contrast to previous 'remote' backup solutions which rely totally on
data being transmitted over relatively slow broadband, BackupPilot has the
means to transport tens or hundreds of Gigabytes to the remote datacentre
for the initial backup. It then automatically compresses and rapidly
transmits any subsequent changes over broadband. Again, unlike tape
backup, any changes could be transmitted frequently - minute by minute if
necessary - rather than waiting until the end of a working day. The
solution has the potential to ensure that data loss is kept to the
absolute minimum.

The functionality of BackupPilot has been designed especially for the SME
environment to be automated and efficient with administration and
management of the system all kept to a minimum.
