Panasonic, the leading brand for which Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. is pleased to announce it will start selling the 103 inch plasma display panel (PDP) with 1080p (progressive) Full HDTV resolution in both Consumer and Professional Channels.

Committed to providing customers with a better visual experience based on its "Ideas for Life" brand statement, Panasonic continues to accelerate innovation of its unique panel, drive and process technologies for higher quality large-screen plasma displays. Indeed, in flat panel displays plasma has technical advantages over other technologies, including LCD, when it comes to making larger size panels.

This world's largest plasma display can deliver more than two million pixels (1,920 ? 1,080) of performance with a 261cm visible screen (diagonal). Panasonic has developed a new rib* and phosphor for these super large panels; thus, the 103-inch 1080p plasma panel features consistent and uniform discharge, delivering the same accurate images from the centre to every corner of the screen and brightness as the current EISA award winning 50-inch HD model (TH-50PX600).

This new top-of-the-line Plasma incorporate a 1080p processor with a System LSI which is based on Panasonic's proprietary integrated architecture for digital consumer electronics. The new LSI incorporates the HD Optimizer that detects and reduces MPEG noise as it receives digital HD signals, producing crisp and clear images. To maximize the performance of the panel, a 1080p driver supports 16-bit image processing that produces razor-sharp motion pictures.

With 4,096 equivalent steps of gradation, the images are so vivid and true-to-life that they can evoke emotion and feelings in the viewers. The "Super Cinema Mode" achieves blacker blacks and a stunning 5,000:1 contrast in dark surroundings. Finally, the connectivity of the 103?" plasma provide a flexible and powerful solution as a wide variety of optional plug-in boards are available including HDMI boards for Consumer use.

Mr. J. Kitagawa, Deputy MD Panasonic Marketing Europe, said: "Our 103-inch 1080p PDP promises high quality images with high brightness, dynamic contrast, high resolution and excellent colour reproduction that no other displays technology cannot match. We believe it will create strong demand in both Consumer and Business Channels, from multipurpose display, educational, medical applications to Home theatre fans." "Demand for large-screen and high picture quality TVs is expected to further increase as digital HD broadcasting services continues to expand throughout the world. Also penetration of HD contents as well as Blu-ray Disc recorders and players will drive demand. Since Plasma is a self-illuminating device, it offers superior characteristics on several measures including dynamic contrast, true-to-life colour reproduction, quick response time for sports and programs with fast-moving images and a wider viewing angle, an important factor for large screen displays. These features make the Plasma panel an ideal device for a large screen TV, and, as a result, global demand for Plasma TV is growing rapidly."

"Panasonic's 103-inch display represents the pinnacle of our achievement to date and truly redefines the level of ultimate home entertainment available for the most demanding video connoisseur. We created it because, as worldwide sales of Plasma TVs continue on a meteoric rise, the market is seeking bigger displays on which people can experience the High Definition lifestyle," said Mr. Kitagawa.

Panasonic owns 21 Japanese and five overseas patents on the product including current applications. *A "rib" divides each gas cell and prevents interference between adjacent cells to produce clear images.
