Napier University, Edinburgh, has implemented Promethean Activpanels in all of its lecture theatres, which means no matter how large the group, lecturers and students will benefit from interactive and engaging session delivery.
At Napier University, 60 Activpanels have been installed in lecture rooms which accommodate more than 20 people. Supplied with accompanying Activstudio software, the Activpanel allows lecturers to enhance lesson content, display DVDs, and connect to the internet. Lecture material is controlled directly from the panel, and annotations made onto the LCD monitor to highlight key learning points. Annotations can also be saved for recall at a later date.
Simple to use, the Activpanel features a 15-inch LCD monitor which displays material that is opened on a PC. With all the functionality of a Promethean interactive whiteboard, lecturers can interact directly with the Activpanel whilst facing their students.
The supplementary Activstudio software features a large number of flipcharts that are specifically designed for use within the education sector, as well as several images and backgrounds to allow lecturers to create exciting and stimulating learning sessions.
When used with a suitable projector, the image size is virtually unrestricted, making the Activpanel an ideal solution for creating more interactive presentations to groups of large numbers.
Andy Wanless, chief technician at Napier University, explains: Before we introduced the Activpanels, lecturers were restricted to writing on standard whiteboards. This was very limiting because not only is most lecture material contained on a PC nowadays, but reading lecture notes could be very difficult, particularly for students at the back of the class.
He continues: The Activpanels offer a practical solution to delivering lectures to large numbers, as everyone in the room can see the screen and the annotations made by the lecturer. They have certainly provided teaching staff with more scope for what they can include in their sessions, as a range of multimedia devices are available in one place.
The Activpanel is operated using a cordless, battery-free pen. As a lightweight and portable tool, it can be transported between rooms with ease, or be installed at a lectern if preferred.
