Never one to hide its light under a bushel, Datalogic recently organised an event at Silverstone racetrack to serve as a launchpad for several announcements. Here's an overview of the product news from the event:
  • The new Datalogic Jet Version 5 PDA
  • The Skorpio hand held for retail apps
  • New software suite for easy application development and device management
  • Datalogic mobile computers achieve Oracle E-Business Suite certification.

The new Jet Version 5: Datalogic's
most powerful and flexible rugged PDA

The new Datalogic Jet Version 5 has been designed for rugged mobile computing, barcoding and data capture applications including field force automation, retail in-store and warehousing.

This new mobile device runs the very latest version of Microsoft Windows CE 5.0 and uses the new Intel PXA 270 520 Mhz microprocessor.

In addition to its increased processing power, the hand held also has increased Flash and RAM memories of 128 Mb each, further optimising its performance. It also comes with a Mini SD card slot.

Wireless communications have also been improved with the option to have up to three wireless communication options in the same deviceBluetooth is standard and Wi-Fi and GSM/GPRS are available as additional options. This enables simultaneous use of voice and data communications in real time regardless of location. Additionally, the device comes with both USB and RS232 connectivity.

The new Jet Version 5 is even more powerful than its predecessor and comes with a range of options making it one of the most flexible mobile computers on the market says Datalogic.

The Skorpio: An aggressive mobile
computer designed for retailers

The new Datalogic Skorpio is a compact hand held mobile computer designed for the retail environment. The device is designed to enable retailers to improve the speed and accuracy of processes such as shelf replenishment, stock checks and price management in-store and in the warehouse.

According to the company, the hand held combines excellent ergonomics with a compact size and exceptionally low weight. Despite its size, the mobile computer is extremely robust and is able to withstand multiple drops. It comes with a long-lasting Li-ION battery designed to last a full shift.

The unit includes a fast Intel X-Scale processor and the latest release of Windows CE operating system. With Bluetooth and WiFi connectivity as standard this unit will work with any WLAN or Bluetooth device. The hand held also includes a mini secure digital (SD) expansion slot.

The hand held is equipped with an integrated laser scanner for reading bar codes, which includes the Datalogic patented green spot to provide visible good read feedback. A large high visibility colour graphic display, with touch screen option ensures the user can clearly see and interact with the applications running on the device. A practical 38-key alphanumeric keypad enables quick input of data, codes and descriptions, for users requiring traditional text-based applications or web-based solutions.

Using the MCL Collection, single or multiple data collection applications can be quickly created, while Wavelink Avalanche software enables IT managers to centralise the management of the mobile units with remote configuration, software synchronisation and firmware updates.

New software suite makes light work of application
development and device management

Datalogic UK has released two new software tools designed to help IT managers and solution providers develop applications more easily and manage its range of mobile devices remotely.

The Datalogic Mobile Director Enterprise software suite works with all of the current Datalogic Windows-based mobile computers including the Datalogic Jet PDA, Viper-Net pistol grip Windows CE terminal, Rhino-Net vehicle mounted terminal, Kyman-Net rugged hand held mobile computer and Datalogic Skorpio mobile computer.

The news software suite comprises the following components:

  • Application servera Windows service application to enable IT managers to locate Datalogic Windows-CE devices, identify them in terms of type and model, and monitor device dependent variables such as the number of trigger pressures or the amount of time the device has been in use. It also enables remote device configuration and scheduled software and configuration updates.
  • Web servera web interface for publishing all the functions of the DL Mobile Director application server on the Internet or intranet.
  • Database Servera SQL server database interface for storing all the information managed by the DL Mobile Director application server on a modern relational database engine.
  • Remote Configuratora Windows oriented tool for connecting to DL Mobile Director application server remotely.
Datalogic has also introduced a rich application programming interface specifically for wireless application development: Mobility Developer Assistant.

The Mobility Developer Assistant provides all of the necessary tools to enable less experienced developers to create feature rich applications that would have previously required traditional C programming capabilities. The tools provided include class libraries, sample applications and the associated documentation. The Mobility Developer Assistant also enables Microsoft .NET compact framework developers to access the value-add features of Datalogics mobile computers.

All the components are installed on Datalogics mobile computers at factory level.

Oracle E-Business Suite certification

Datalogic, a member of the Oracle Mobile and RFID Community, has received certification for its Datalogic Jet professional PDAs and its full range of Windows CE mobile devices. The certification means that Datalogic users can now integrate with the Oracle ERP suite using the Oracle Lite interface running as a terminal emulation application on its devices. This reportedly guarantees interoperability with Oracles warehouse management system.

With Oracle Database Lite 10g, Oracle users can use Datalogics mobile computers to obtain a secure and reliable technology architecture that can enhance performance and scalability to support thousands of simultaneous users. In addition, this solution from Oracle makes the mobile computers ready to synchronise data on a local database on the mobile computer with the central database and enables Oracle application components to be installed on the devices themselves.
