Dot Hill (Nasdaq: HILL), a market leader in providing flexible storage offerings, responsive service and support to original equipment manufactures (OEMs) and system integrators (SIs), today announced its new Rapid Evolution (R/EvolutionTM) architecture. The R/Evolution architecture is the first ever to enable OEMs to easily reconfigure storage systems from a modular platform, dramatically shortening time to market and lowering development costs.
The R/Evolution's modular, integrated platform delivers Dot Hill's customisable storage services at enterprise level. Featuring price and performance ranges that OEMs need to specifically address each segment of the volume and midrange market as it evolves, while easily incorporating their unique technologies and value-add for maximum competitive differentiation.
"Over the past year, Dot Hill has continued innovating on the core modular architecture, performance and reliability characteristics of its systems, controllers and software while increasing value-added functionality that OEMs and indirect partners can capitalise upon to develop a range of products," said Sanjeev Aggarwal, senior analyst at Yankee Group. "At the same time, the company has correctly positioned itself for the continued growth of Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) and Serial ATA (SATA) drives for mid-tier and secondary storage applications."
Providing scalability in both price and performance from a single code base and hardware design, R/Evolution also allows for the easy mixing and matching of interface types on both the host and drive side. In addition, R/Evolution provides a variety of management options including Web, SMI-S, simple network management protocol (SNMP) and common language infrastructure (CLI).
"From this modular platform, we've essentially made reconfigurable storage a reality," said Dana Kammersgard, president of Dot Hill. "R/Evolution enables OEMs to develop targeted, volume and midrange storage solutions that quickly and cost-effectively grow their markets today; whilst also providing a reliable roadmap for adapting to future market evolution. Build what you need, when you need it, at the price and performance levels you desire - and when that evolves, simply switch out the features and modules and your next-generation solution is ready to go with minimum investment and time to market."
The Dot Hill R/Evolution Architecture offers unique features, including:
Tiered Storage Modules:
Feature a modular chassis system
Provide low cost non-redundant and value priced fully redundant configurations to support physical and environmental protection
Offer the most efficient drive density in the midrange market with 20 per cent more drive spindles per unit of rack space
Dot Hill Storage Services:
Provide the core abilities for Dot Hill's storage solutions to protect data access, to snapshot/mirror data locally and to replicate data remotely
Offer enterprise-class software capabilities that are central to Dot Hill's ability to customise the level of protection required to the OEMs market needs
Performance Data Controllers:
Feature multiple versions of the same core design with different performance characteristics
Allow OEMs to customise the level of performance and redundancy they need for each tier of the storage architecture
Provide a real-time operating software (RTOS) for running management applications and support non-disruptive updates
Application and Grid Platforms:
Provide host platforms for OEM storage applications and enhanced file and data services that support security, virtualisation, service level agreements (SLA) and management
Include embedded intelligence and clustering capabilities to meet the growing midrange market demands
Enable OEMs to optimise storage applications and create vertical market/application appliances
HIM and DM Modules:
Host Interface Modules (HIMs) provide the ability to add, change and expand host connectivity on the same system
Drive Modules:
Included in the PDC module
Provide the ability to mix and match drive types in the same enclosure to provide complete flexibility on both sides of the storage solution
RAIDar Manager:
Provides the ability to create, configure and control disk volumes dynamically without interrupting operations
Gives users complete control and reporting tools over every aspect of their storage system
Storage Presentation Services:
Provide the ability to present storage in a variety of methods or application program interfaces (APIs) for OEMs
Enable file services, storage virtualisation, resource management, cross vendor APIs, flexible software and feature licensing and support industry standards such as Storage Management Initiative Specification (SMI-S)
Allow OEMs to build solutions that are tightly integrated into existing product lines and create unique value-add.
