O2 Ireland selects StorageTek as partner for data archiving and business continuity

Mobile phone operator O2 Ireland has selected StorageTek, the worlds most trusted partner for storing and managing critical business information, to future-proof O2s data archiving and business continuity infrastructure. The new relationship has been consolidated with an order, concluded in conjunction with StorageTeks partner EDS GFS, for a StorageTek L700 tape library to be located at O2s Dublin facilities and capable of storing up to 270 TB of data.

The decision by O2 to choose StorageTek follows a strategic review of its storage infrastructure and in particular the operators capability to respond to emerging regulatory requirements to store call and billing records for many years.

According to Keith Kiernan, Head of Product & Services Operations at O2 Ireland: As our industry drives up the need for data retention, we need to work hard to stay ahead of the game and have selected StorageTek to help us assess our current capabilities and to understand the optimum configuration for our future storage needs.

The purchase of the new StorageTek L700 tape library is the first step in refreshing our infrastructure and, with its very high levels of resilience, it will provide us with a solid base on which to develop, he continued.

Before selecting StorageTek O2 carried out an evaluation of a number of competitive suppliers and chose StorageTek on the basis of its professional services capabilities as well as technological excellence.

Tom Houston, Managing Director of StorageTek Ireland, commented: O2s decision is the latest validation from the market of StorageTeks position as a leading storage solutions provider. Our value proposition to O2 is about much more than hardware. They have also evaluated and selected our professional services skills to advise on infrastructure development and long term cost reduction through strategies such as Information Lifecycle Management. We are looking forward to a long-term relationship with O2 in which we deliver value based on the best professional advice.
