New intelligent PDUs from MGE UPS SYSTEMS: controlling power supply distribution within racks

Power supply distribution within racks is of vital importance for the operation of equipment and IT networks. MGE UPS SYSTEMS, a world leader in high availability power solutions, has now introduced a new range of intelligent Power Distribution Units (PDUs) to manage this critical power supply function.

Jason Koffler, UK Channel Sales Manager says This new range of Power Distribution Units provides our customers with new levels of resilience and control, whether this is through using our Enterprise Power Manager Software to control the device or by simply preventing upstream tripping of protection devices due to a single device over loading

How to monitor power consumption? How to reset locked-up devices remotely, even when the Ethernet is down? Information technology operations managers are often faced with these questions. The solution is MGE's comprehensive range of PDUs with communication functions for remote supervision of the power distributed within a rack.

Anticipate to ensure continuous service

These new PDUs can be programmed to raise an alarm when power consumption is about to exceed the limits. The administrator can then react in good time to take the action required to avoid overloads and their consequences.

Gentle start-up sequence

Turning on devices simultaneously can be the cause of overloads. To prevent large inrush current, MGE Switched PDUs will start up each outlet in sequence.

Real-time supervision for immediate action

Some server faults can only be cleared by rebooting. Each outlet on a MGE Switched PDU can be switched Off or On individually, saving significant time and money for high availability data and hosting services. Remote access uses in-band and out-of-band communication.

The On/Off status of each receptacle is displayed locally by LEDs and can be monitored remotely using a simple Web interface. This interface can be easily integrated into standard network management systems as well as into MGE's Enterprise Power Manager system.

Security and reliability

Security of remote PDU operation is achieved through :

w SSL/SSH encryption protocol.

w Several administration levels to restrict access to critical outlets.

w Out-of-band access by modem for remote control even if the network is down.

w Locking IEC inlet and outlets for connection reliability

Compact

MGE PDUs are available for vertical mounting (0U) or horizontal mounting (1 or 2U).

Models
w Switched PDU: vertical, 16 X IEC 10A outlets or 1U horizontal, 8 X IEC 10A outlets,

w Ampmeter PDU: vertical, 12 X IEC 10A outlets or 2U horizontal, 12 X IEC 16A outlets

Options

w Humidity and temperature measurement sensor.

w Switched PDU extension module to double the number of switched outlets

These PDUs are part of the Pulsar/Comet PDU range launched in spring 2004.
