Embedded PC speeds integration into POS and multimedia kiosk applications

Trident has introduced a network-ready, touchscreen digital PC suitable for direct deployment on retail floors, reception areas, hotel front desks, factory floors, and many other commercial and industrial locations. The new unit features an integrated smart card reader, supporting secure payments, loyalty schemes, employee payment schemes, e-topup and controlled-access services. In addition, an integrated VoIP phone supports convenient toll-free communications over a local or wide area network, expanding potential applications to include automated front-desks and increasing the value and complexity of services that can be delivered.

Tridents digital touchscreen PC is self-contained for easy integration out of the box. Its 15 screen provides a large, bright image, ideal for browsing Intranet, Extranet or Internet pages, viewing multimedia presentations or video, and ordering products via the touchscreen. The resistive touchscreen is shatterproof and enables easy, clutter free operation.

The new digital PC is built on a custom motherboard developed by Trident to support rapid integration into retail, point of information, industrial automation and medical environments. The 1GHz CPU, which provides ample performance for embedded applications, is integrated onto the motherboard alongside the chipset, touch screen controller, card reader and all other

system components to create a self-contained solution. An embedded PC operating system combines the user friendliness, performance and flexibility of a PC with the low cost and extra security of an embedded solution. External audio, USB and serial interfaces are also provided, and connect directly to the main chipset. The system features a number of protection devices, including a hardware watchdog to protect against software failure, and two internal heat sensors to protect against excessive heat build up.

Fanless operation minimises noise emissions and requires minimal venting holes, enabling sealing to IP65 on the front face and IP54 to the rear. The rear of the unit also carries a VESA 75 standard connection to an articulated support arm.

The processor, PC chipsets, software and operating system support can all be modified if required, to meet the exact requirements of a specific application. Other options include a high brightness screen for use in daylight conditions, and IP65 weather proofing for outdoor applications. A range of mounting options, including custom mountings, allow the terminal to be adapted to almost any installation requirement.
